"Suck Your Stomach In & Put Some Color On!" -What Southern Mamas Tell Their Daughters That the Rest of Y'all Should Know Too! Written by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson. Southern Belles had a lot of pressure to act proper growing up. I'm reminded of all the funny sayings that I grew up with as I've been reading this book my sister-n-law gave me. I grew up in Mississippi so this book has been a hoot to read.

Here are some of the funny sayings that Shellie highlighted in the book from various wise Southern Mamas:

"I was the eldest of six, with two younger sisters. My mother always told me, "Don't you dare ruin your reputation. You better think of your little sisters coming along behind you!"  Sandra E. Hopper Dill-Little, Gaffney, South Carolina.

My mom always recited this little poem: "When a job is once begun, Never stop until it's done. Whether it be great or small, Do it well or not at all." Billie Francis Naff, Banks, Missouri.

Mama always said, "Boys are like streetcars. There will another one by in the next fifteen minutes." Evelyne Edmonson, Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

I'm a Southern Mama and I've told all of my children to remember this one thing: "Whatever bad habit your sweetheart has before you marry--it'll multiply by a hundred precent afterward. Now if you can live with that, then you should have a happy marriage." Brenda Vicars, Alabama.

Thanks to Mama, my brother and I became involuntary members of the clean plate club. At almost every meal, she pressed us with, "Children, eat your colors." To this day, I can't look at a plate of broccoli or a bowl of carrots without hearing those words in my head.  Trisha McNeil, Fuquay Varina, North Carolina.

And my favorite....

My mama had this advice, "The first time, marry for love. The second time, marry for money." On a similiar note, I heard this one from a middle-aged woman from North Carlina, (not my mama but a Southern Mama nonetheless): "You can marry more money in a minute than you can make in a lifetime!" Courtney Fingar, Washington, D.C.

Thanks for the laugh! :) I remember my dad (from Mississippi also) used to tell me on Saturday mornings as a teen , "Go fix your face!!"  (ie  go put some makeup on).  I should have said, "but it ain't broken!"  But, I was a very complient kid. :)

They left out the ole saying "You have to suffer to be beautiful."

Another good one, my momma used to tell us girls "Never say anything you don't want to see printed in the newspaper."

Sonja, great to hear from you! Have you read the Millionaire book yet?

Andrew...You are on the complete opposite side of the U.S. from me! How's your market?

Hey Rick! Did you ever hide your peas in your milk?

Michael, good job quote indeed! Hope your daughter learns it too! I don't think I used that one with my daughters, but it's a good one!
