Port Moody steps up for Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics…

On day 105 (February 11th), one day before the Olympic torch reaches its 2010 Vancouver destination, the Torch Relay will be coming through Port Moody and the Tri-Cities, stopping for a celebration at Maillardville's Mackin Park in Coquitlam.

The Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be on Friday, February 12th.

In the Olympic spirit, the City of Port Moody, with the help of the Arts and Culture Committee and Games Legacy Task Force, proudly showcased a new colourful collection of 5 winter banners depicting the winter sports that are practiced in and around Port Moody: hockey, curling, figure-skating, sledge-hockey and snowboarding.

The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) is seeking a reduction of at least 30 per cent in local vehicle traffic into downtown Vancouver. To help encourage motorists to take public transit during the Games, the City of Port Moody will make almost 500 parking spaces available to passengers using the West Coast Express train from February 12 to February 28.

The parking lots in the Rocky Point Pool parking lot at 2800 Murray Street (150 parking spaces) and the Inlet playing field parking lot in the 3200-block of Murray Street (300 parking spaces), will be staffed by volunteer parking attendants, provided by the City of Port Moody, to offer directions and general assistance to users.

The West Coast Express will have an 80 per cent capacity increase, supporting customers on a first-come, first-serve basis during the Games, by adding six additional trips on weekdays, nine more on Saturdays and seven on Sundays.

The Port Moody Recreation Complex has already been made available for meeting and training spaces.

John--Sounds like your city is getting prepared for the onslaught of visitors during the Olympics.  I remember that Atlanta took similar measures druing the 1996 games.

In the fall my husband & I took a cruise from Vancouver to Alaska and then down to San Diego.  We purchased a jade Inuksuk.  Let the games begin.

I will subscribe to your blog and be back for further updates.  Thanks.

Mary

Hi Mary,

Too bad the train doesn't come by your neck of the woods.

When I was a teen (late 60's)I spent many a weekend in Buffalo and Niagara Falls, NY; what fun memories in Lewistown, North Tonawanda, West Seneca, Cheektawaga, etc.  Casey's, Lakewood, and a whole lot of great clubs were our faves. The last time I was in Buffalo (81'ish) I saw the Sabres at Memorial Aud.

I've been on the West Coast now since 1989.

I'll try to keep the blog interesting; thanks Mary.

Sounds like a deal---Olympic updates.

I have not been to Casey's or Lakewood, but I have been to Buffalo many times.  Love their zoo and shopping malls.  Of course the Falls is a great draw.  A few years ago my husband and I took our boat through the NY Barge Canal which starts or ends at Tonawanda.  Great memories.

I have always lived in PA, but love to travel.  Our trip to Pacific NW was awesome.  Great area.

Happy New Year.

Mary

I remember flying out of Toronto Airport, pay cheque in hand, first flight available for anywhere in the New England States on "Student Stand-by" for $50. Needless to say I've been to most of the major cities in the North East including Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

Also, I've driven the area from St Louis to Nashvile to Florida to Vermont, on difeerent occasions.

I've enjoyed visiting all of the 22 States I've been to at one time or another.

Happy New Year to yoy and yours Mary.

Wow!  That would be a good topic for a blog.  We have driven up & down the east coast many times.  My favorite is St. Simon's Island in southern Georgia.  That is after the shores of Lake Erie--we live one mile from lake on six acres of wooden property with stream.  There is no place like home, right?
