Federal Fair Housing Laws: The Same from San Francisco Ca to Gettysburg Pa

Federal Fair Housing laws are the same no matter where in the United States you are.

Title VIII of the United States Civil Rights Act of 1968 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin. This act prohibits refusing to sell or rent, discriminating on terms, discriminatory advertising, and discrimination of provisions of brokerage services, "steering" and "redlining".

Refusal to rent or sell is often a product of landlords or property managers misrepresenting the availability of a property. If the property is available, it is available to everyone.

Charging higher rents or security deposits, letting buildings housed by tenants of color fall into disrepair, while continuing to properly maintain properties housed by whites are all examples of Discrimination in Terms and Conditions.

House for Rent, Non whites need not apply. I think this one speaks for itself. We have all seen discrimination in the form of advertising. It is probably the most obvious form of discrimination.

Steering, discouraging anyone from a particular neighborhood while at the same time encouraging them to another is "steering". Steering is usually prevalent relating to the handicapped and/or race.

Redlining, relates to loaning money for purchasing, constructing, maintaining, repairing or making home improvements. This also includes appraising neighborhoods using different criteria for different neighborhoods.

Unfortunately housing discrimination is still alive and well in many area's of the United States including San Francisco Ca, and yes, even Gettysburg Pa. Penalties can be stiff (as they should be) and can be handed from down from HUD, the US Attorney General, and state agencies when handed over to them by HUD. Title VIII of the United States Civil Rights Act of 1968 simply asks that those involved in housing in any form "TREAT EVERYONE THE SAME"
