The American Red Cross -- Blood Drive

One of my FAVORITE local coffee shops -- Ava's Roasteria -- is sponsoring a blood drive tomorrow to help the American Red Cross.

I found out about it when I went to meet potential buyers this afternoon.  It might be a little late in getting the word out . . . BUT . . . the American Red Cross is going to get my blood tomorrow!  It's the least I can do, don't you think!?

Please visit their website:  The American Red Cross

Writing this blog, sparked a memory . . .  When I was a girl in elementary school, we had library time, and I pulled a book out of the shelf "CLARA BARTON, Girl Nurse."    We had to tell our teacher why we wanted the book.  I told her it was because she had a name like mine.  The teacher probably wanted to hear:  "I want to be just like CLARA BARTON when I go up, a nurse!" or something profound.  Nope . . . Clara, Carla . . . it caught my attention.

However, it was one of my favorite books, and I read it cover-to-cover.  I think it was my first "Look MA . .  . NO PICTURES" book.  I remember that title to this day, and I loved that book.  Clara Barton was my  hero.

Okay, so I become a Realtor(r), But I remember that book, and the wonderful program -- that visionary leader -- CLARA BARTON founded in 1881.

Please consider sponsoring a BLOOD DRIVE in your local area!  We might not have a lot of money to donate this time of year . . . but we all have the gift of life to share!

Give the gift of life . . . Clara Barton did.

Carla, always a good thing. I have an aunt who was a nurse, many years ago she did the blood mobile and loved her job so much. And it is a great day for people to give blood, could mean a good start to the new year!

Happy New Year Carla!

Loved the story about the book, too funny.

When I was taken off of high blood pressure medicine earlier this year, the first thing I did was try to give blood at the Red Cross center here since I've donated an even ten gallons prior to the high blood pressure. Unfortunately, the Red Cross still discriminates against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and transsexual people. I didn't realize that, so my 2009 monetary donation to them will be my last until they change.

Happy New Year!

I wasn't allowed to give blood today because I have been to India within the past year.   I think the concern is for the diseases that blood carries.  A friend died because she received a blood transfusion and the blood used for her contained HIV.  This was about 20 years ago, and they didn't screen.  Sometimes people take positions on issues that, to them, are very near and dear.  My blog wasn't about the discrimination. The organization also provides relief efforts.  If anyone 'needed' a blood transfusion they would not be denied blood to save their life

"More than a million Red Cross volunteers and 30,000 employees annually mobilize relief to people affected by more than 67,000 disasters, train almost 12 million people in necessary medical skills and exchange more than a million emergency messages for U.S. military service personnel and their family members."  American Red Cross

I'll share this blog and your comment with my son who donated  today.  Maybe you'll ruin his good spirit on donating, just as you managed to upset me and my childhood memories of Clara Barton's organization . . . a woman who begin this cause BEFORE the Woman's Suffrage Movement even took place.  She wasn't allowed to vote, in other words.  She was totally discimintated against . . . and yet . . .she looked beyond that and didn't say "Well, I can't vote . . . so I'm not going to do anything for men."  Maybe I'll blog about feline leukemia, and you can donate to that cause for Zoey?

I donated blood today.  It lifted my spirit, and I feel so good about what I did that it seems nothing can penetrate that.  Here's why.  I lost two people I loved this year.  One was my first kiss, Lexi, and the other was one of my best friends, Michael, a gay man.  I wish it could be my blood that saved there lives.  The pint I donated today will save two lives.  They will save the lives of people that can lift some one elses spirits the same way Michael and Lexi lifted mine when they were here.  Thank you mom, for the blog and telling me about the donation today.

Like I say on today's post, being able to give today is a pure priviledge.

Carla -  I don't know what touched me more;  your response to RR's comment or your son's response.  They both brought tears to my eyes and I admire your son so very much.  He is saving lives instead of stirring up bitterness.  Applause Applause to you both!
