Ouch – spider or scorpion bite!

I’m visiting my Dad who lives in a beautiful, woody area in eastern Tennessee where the beauty of the Appalachian mountains is simply breath-taking. Because it’s winter, we haven’t spent as much time outdoors as usual, but it’s actually been mild weather for winter.

My Dad and his wife have built miles of hiking trails in the acreage behind their homes and the foliage is awesome in the spring and summer.  The photo here shows a fair amount of green considering it's January.View from Dad's cottage

Did I mention that I’m a “city girl?”

Demetrius, Theo and I are visiting Dad and Dr. B for the holidays. Yesterday I noticed a knot on my back leg slightly above my knee and showed it to my husband. His reaction startled me, “What the hell happened there?” he asked! I ran to the bathroom to get a mirror, and “Yikes” is right. There is a huge bruised area around the small knot.

Spider bite, I thought?

Ouch!

So, I put on shorts and ran to show it to my Dad. He asked me if the area was painful, which it is not – so that ruled out the dangerous brown recluse spider bite. Dad very calmly told me it was likely a scorpion bite and proceeded to show me several dead scorpions caught in his kitchen light fixtures.

Of course, I’ve googled spider and scorpion bites to make sure my leg is not going to fall off. Needless to say, I’m taking some fresh garlic to bed with me tonight.

Dad's homemade sign warns about his rock walkway being slippery when wet. Perhaps he needs to add a sign warning of the local critters attacking!

It's amazing the damage those little critters can cause.  I found out a few years ago that I'm allergic to wasps.  Had a fun afternoon in the hospital.

There are scorpions down here too but thankfully I haven't had any close encounters with them.  Feel better soon.

OK, I'll bite. Garlic? Um, the garlic is for the Vampfire that may have bit your leg? Please explain to me!

As a Tennessean, let me say, I am glad it was not a fiddle back (brown recluse).  You should be okay.

My advice would also include squishing any black windows on sight too.

Get well soon!

Hi Lori ~ Aaagh!!  I get flipped out enough at a beetle (even ladybugs wig me out when they're above me flying around the kitchen light) or big moth in my kitchen light. Scorpions? Yikes.  This is when I remember that though winter is not my favorite it is good for something - makes life impossible for a whole bunch of creatures. Works for me.  Hope that bite is ok - sounds nasty.

Hello all!  I think I'm fine - just mostly startled at the thought of that critter touching me! I don't seem to have a fever or any of the signs that would cause worry.

David - I'm allergic to poison ivy - I feel your pain!

Sara - and you have allegators too!

Rich, the garlic is purely for my comfort and peace of mind - have no clue if spiders or bugs are turned off by the odor.

Joel - yes, I know the brown recluse is quite dangerous. We definitely checked on that one first.

Liz - the problem with winter is that the critters get cold and want to come inside! And evidently in MY BED!
