The best I can come up with is that its some type of message delivery system.  It looks like  something gets clipped to the birds mouth, and is then send up or down the line to a receiver.

It must be part of a mini ski lift?  Actually I can't figure it out.

Hi Gary.  It looks like some kind of small pulley system, but other than that, I don't have a guess.

Hi Gary, here in Vancouver when growing up one of the stores: the C C Store had one of these systems.  Instead of a cash register at the check-out stand, the clerk would take your cash and the ticket, put it into the wooden container and send it up to the cashier upstairs behind the half-wall like in your second photo.  The cashier would put the correct change back into the wooden container and send it back to the clerk on the main floor.  It was quite the scene to watch in action!  Thanks!  John

OK - Here's my guess.  It appears to be a pulley system with a can bottle or can opener on the end of it!  I say it belongs in a brewery, where patrons can sit at one end of the bar, and as a self-service tool, open their own cans or bottles:-)

Thank you all for visiting this post and for your comments and guesses.  The photo is of an antique "Cash Carrier System" manufactured by the Lamson Company.  This particular system is in the original JC Penney store in Kemmerer, Wyoming along with a lot of other interesting historical items.  The best description that I have seen was by John (comment #11).  This system is in working condition but is not in use on a day to day basis.

Jim, You started off with a correct answer -- but I think it still confused a lot of people.

Richard, I loved your answer -- I went skiing last week for the first time in 25 years and it does remind me of the ski lifts.

Gary, You were right about the pulleys that are involved and it is quite a complex system.

Mark,  I am so glad that you responded even if you had no guess -- It's fun to know that people are looking and wondering.

Jim, It definitely is a forerunner of the pneumatic tube.

Rich, Great guess -- if I hadn't seen one as a kid, I probably would have thought of old wiring.

Irene, I'm glad that you will be stopping back.

John, You really knew about this and it was fun to watch.  We had an old store in Evanston, Wyoming where I grew up and they used one of these.  I am going to have to check to see if they still have it, but I think they remodeled and it is probably gone.

Myrl, You have the best and most fun answer yet.  it would be fun to use it for self service beer.

How cool is that?  When I saw the first photo the light fixture made me think this was an old school room or train station.  I would never have guessed the correct answer.  Good one Gary.

Jenny, I'm glad that you though this was a good one for name that photo -- you've had a lot of great ones in that group.

Jana,  I try to find unique items and I know that I learned a lot in taking this photo.  The employees in the store didn't even know the name for the "Cash Carrier' or who made it.  I had to research it -- but that is part of the fun.
