Homicides last year dropped 8 percent from 2008 and 17 percent over the last two years in Lee County.

The local drop mirrors a national trend. The FBI announced a 4.4 percent decrease nationwide for the first half of 2009 compared with the same period a year earlier.

Those in local law enforcement are pleased with the decline.

In Fort Myers, many of the homicides were drug-related. In the Cape, three-fourths were domestic. At the sheriff's office, the motives were more varied; no one reason dominated, but there was a mix of domestic violence, drug crimes and robbery.

Cape Coral had a total of 4 Murders in 2009. Cape Coral has a clearance rate of 100 percent, and has maintained that record for 15 years.
