Home Energy Saving Tips for January – Save Money on your Energy Bills!
The cold winter weather keeps many people indoors, which increases energy use. Home Energy Solutions of the Triad, LLC provides the following energy-saving tips to help you save money on your energy bills – and do your part for the environment.
Save More with a Home Energy Audit
For more significant savings, a home energy audit will uncover specific areas of energy loss in your home using state-of-the-art equipment, and provide solutions. For more information or to book a home energy audit, please visit www.HomeEnergyTeam.com or call us at 1-800-724-4841 or 336-587-8345.
Cooking
For small quantities of food, use a toaster oven instead of a conventional oven. A toaster oven uses a lot less energy, and it cooks faster. For maximum energy efficiency, make sure that air circulation around the toaster oven is not obstructed.
A kettle is more efficient at heating water than a stove element or microwave oven. To keep your kettle running energy-efficiently, clean it regularly with boiling water and vinegar to remove mineral deposits.
Use an electric frying pan instead of a stove whenever possible. An electric frying pan uses less energy and can cook the same amount of food.
You can use up to 50 percent less energy by cooking with a microwave instead of an oven. A microwave cooks food faster and more efficiently because the energy is used to heat the food, not the oven itself or pans.
Water
Heating water is the third largest energy expense in your home, accounting for about 16 percent of your utility bill.
Replacing existing faucets and showerheads with water saving low-flow alternatives can decrease your energy use significantly and cut your water usage by up to 50%. Low-flow solutions save on your energy bill, and increase conservation which is environmentally friendly.
Take showers instead of baths. You use approximately 15 to 25 gallons of hot water for a bath, but less than 10 gallons for a 5-minute shower.
Using a dishwasher saves energy – although five minutes of pre-rinsing dishes under the tap can use up to 115 litres of water. Modern dishwashers are approximately 95 percent more energy efficient than dishwashers from 1972; your dishwasher could be costing you more than buying a new one!
Consider buying a tankless water heater, which reduces energy use by up to 34% (compared to a standard electric unit).
