Where's the bucks?! >> Does blogging = Big Bucks?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Advantage

When I discovered Active Rain in early 2007 I went nuts blogging my little heart out and very quickly became Idaho's #1 Active Rain blogger, a title I relinquished in mid 2009 with no regrets.

When I did my major blogging it was after hours, usually well after 8:00 p.m. and into the wee hours of the night.  I could do this because I am divorced (No, blogging did not cause my divorce silly!) and had the time to do it. I quickly learned about the SEO benefit of Active Rain blogging from friends like Chris Elizabeth Griffith, Cyndee Haydon, and my dear friend Karen George.

Early in 2009 I was blessed with a wonderful lead generation system that took months to put into place and finally allowed me to have a steady, reliable stream of leads.  As we all know, in this economy most leads require additional work and attention and my leads are no exception. I work at least twice as hard as I did even a year ago with the same type of lead on the same type of transaction but I get them to the closing table and that is what pays the bills.

I have spoken to some top AR bloggers and social media members that have called or emailed me and asked if I am alright because they have not seen me around Active Rain much. When I explain to them my success in a very tough market they are surprised and have shared with me how tough it is for them in their markets and how much they are struggling.

I explain to my friends that I cannot afford to sit in front of a computer and blog my little heart out anymore or chat with Facebook friends all day. I need to take all my leads very seriously and work every lead as if they were the last lead I would get. I have done minimal blogging at best and have hired a great "copy writer" to write my powerful SEO blogs and website content which is a better use of my time. This combination has allowed me the time to take care of my daily leads and not loose the Google Juice my sites need.

I simply decided several months ago that I needed to work smarter and use my time more efficiently. I could sit in front of my computer all day long and blog my little heart out or I could put systems in place that would allow me the time to make a good living while not giving up a strong web presence and I have succeeded in doing just that.

Here's to "Smart Blogging!"

Hi George - I love blogging and commenting, but there are times when I just can't do as much as I'd like.  Since I am also on facebook and twitter, I do have to let something slide.  Sometimes it's housework LOL, but as long as I need a paycheck, I can't afford to let my business slide.  Thank goodness I guess so many leads from AR.

George, I know how hard it is to blog and work the leads at the same time.  I've learned that blogging is more of my stress reliever, plus Active Rain has taught me more than I would have learned anywhere else.  I'm jealous of your "copy writer"!  I envy you lead generator.  Sounds like you have a great business plan!

What you're doing makes perfect sense to me.  I have a hard time spending just 30 minutes to an hour on the blogging.  I enjoy it but other things have to be done.

George, my friend, another post that left me staring out the window thinking about your wise words :-)

I do know all about your lead generation program and can understand how busy it is keeping you in a great way. But, if an agent doesn't have a good lead generation program such as yours, they have to prospect somehow. For that, I am hoping that blogging will be of help. The trick for me is to not spend too much time just goofing off on twitter and facebook, but rather, use those social media sites and Active Rain to develop a real estate presence in my community. You rock at that. I am re-organizing this aspect, as well as my time mangement skills, for 2010.

Even though you're not blogging your little heart out now, I still treausre those blog posts you do share!

Hugs,

tamara

Hey George, any chance you'll share your lead source?  I have to aay that starting over in Idaho from square 1 last year, most of my business came from my blog.  Just folks Googling for info and up popped my blog, like magic!  I would love to know what you're using for a lead generation source that is working for you....

George_ I say do whatever works for you. I don't like to pursue leads. I don't work with buyers. I am a listing agent and we get our listings directly from our blogging. When a seller calls to list from our blog, we can do the entire listing over the phone and email. They are ready, they have already interviewed us through reading our blog. They are calling to ask for our help. I don't have time with 40 to 50 listings to follow leads as you and I discussed when we talked for over an hour the other night. The rest of our listings we get from our expired listing marketing which rocks! And referrals from AR agents and past clients, attorneys and other business folks here who refer us.

We just got another great referral source. A local agent who is in the know with all the Polo people- she does not do short sales- so she refers us to all her clients! We just got 3 short sale listing referrals from her this week. Most of these people are not even US citizens. We love this business! Katerina

Katerina- You are in another world with your blogging my friend. 99.9% of Realtors don't use blogging correctly and is the lead generating tool it can be. My hat is off to you my friend.

Amazing how much time you can actually spend blogging.  I had the same revelation about a year ago as well and have been pretty quite on AR.  I only recently decided to come back... not to blog just for the sake of blogging... but i found it to be a great way just to help clear my mind.
