Well, it was time. We cut down our Christmas tree during our annual Christmas tree hunt on the day after Thanksgiving. We went to a new tree lot in Wright City, MO and despite not having a lot of trees, we found THE most beautiful tree this year. We moved into a new home last year with 9 foot ceilings so we were able to get an 8 foot tree. We went with a white pine this year instead of the usual scotch pine. We sat in our family room many evenings this holiday season admiring the tree. But on January 2, it was time for the tree to come down.
Jim had major back surgery on December 18. It is a surgery he has had before so he knew what he was getting in to. Originally, the surgery was planned for December 29th but we got a call on December 17th asking if he wanted to move his surgery up. Because of the intense pain necessitating the surgery, he jumped at the chance even though we knew that it would put a kink in the holiday season. A lumbar laminectomy requires many weeks of downtime and rehab. The way things were originally planned, we would have enough time for Jim to help put away all of the holiday decorations. So, decorate I did. Lots of outdoor lights and indoor decorations. Besides, Jim could help me get everything put away and all of the boxes put back up in the attic. Well.... Amazing how the best laid plans go awry! I was happy that Jim could have his surgery earlier but that left me with all of the de-decorating and decoration restorage. I do have some help lined up for the box storing, but I did get all of the decorations put away myself.
I took the tree down and had a neighbor help me drag it out of the house and cut it in half for the trash company to pick up on recycle day. Note for all Chesterfield, MO residents who also need to dispose of their real tree: Allied Waste who is the waste hauler for the entire city will pick up real Christmas trees when placed at the curb on your appropriate yard waste pick up day as long as it is cut into 4 foot sections and all decorations are removed. These pickups will occur during the entire month of January so get your tree to the curb soon. For any questions about tree pickups, check out the Allied Waste website at http://www.stlouis.disposal.com/index.aspx. I took it to the curb yesterday and it was gone by the end of the day. I love Christmas and especially the tree we cut down this year, but it was time for it to go. Happy recycling!
