When you are saving money for a house - don't hide it in your boots!

By

I was listening to our local radio station yesterday morning when Preston & Steve at WMMR were reporting on their "Bizzaro Files".  This portion of their show always intrigues me and so I tuned my ears in to listen.

A few stories went by and they were ok - then this particular story caught my attention.  You'll see why in a second.

Apparently, a woman had been doing some cleaning out of sorts when she came across a pair of her http://www.freefoto.com/browse/810-20-0?ffid=810-20-0husbands old boots.  Well he hadn't worn them in quite sometime so she proceeded to throw them to the curb.  Some time passes (not sure exactly how much) but the couple, who had been saving for a house decided it was time to make their move!

The husband went in search of his boots to retrieve the stash of money they had been saving for the down payment to discover the boots missing.  After revealing to his wife that their life savings of $60,000 was stuffed in one of the boots they began a frantic search to find the boots she had left at the curb!

New Home

You see, this gentelman didn't feel his money was safe in a bank. Of, course it would be much safer stuffed in the toe of his shoe.

UMMM, I DON'T THINK SO!!!

Surprisingly, after word of this story got out.  The money was found, ironically by a couple who had already planned to use the money as a deposit for buying their own new home!  Their deal was canceled and the money returned to the rightful owners!

Lesson for the day:  Don't leave you rmoney in an old boot!

When you are ready to make your dream a reality, pull your life savings out of your boot the bank and give me a call!

Bridget, I sold a parcel of land many years ago to an old Yankee fellow, who brought cash to the closing, it was in excess of $50,000. He told us at the closing he had spent the previous night digging up the yard, he had put the loot in Mason jars and buried them in his yard.

I wonder what that husband would have done had they money not been returned... that's a lot of money to throw away!!!  Besides the fact that money is safer in a bank.. I don't know any lender taking "shoe" money these days.

Marilyn - can't believe it either

Andrea - yes - howar ethey going to justify the money - lenders usually need to see it in a bank.

Bridget, this is an interesting story and it reminds me of a client who lost money in a similar fashion...but I think I'll turn that into a post.  Anyway those people were incredibly lucky to see any of that money again...lucky that who found it had a conscience...honest people.

Kay - my thoughts exactly

Bridget, who knows the answer to that question?  I don't know that I would actually turn it in, but would rather advertise it in the local paper something like..."Money found...guess where, the amount and what it was wrapped in and it's yours".

I would hope the owners of the money paid a reward to those who returned it.

Nick - I agree.  I think I would have tried to fin dthe owners before I made plans to buy a house with it.  Not sure if they paid a reward but I would hope so as well.
