Jurisdiction for response to areas outside the Village corporate limits was very confusing and these areas had minimum, sporadic protection. In 1953, there was increased pressure placed upon the county board to provide for fire protection in the rural, unincorporated areas. As a result of this pressure, fire protection districts were created in July of 1953, as separate taxing entities and were responsible for providing fire protection to these areas. Shortly thereafter, the South Elgin Fire Department was transformed into the South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District and began providing protection to the surrounding “countryside." Residential growth and population of the area have been rapidly increasing over the past several years with more subdivisions, commercial, and industrial developments approved. The recently constructed high school and middle school complex will have a daily population of nearly 4,500 when fully occupied. A station site for a third station, located across from the education complex has already been secured. As the needs for services continue to increase, we look forward to meeting the challenges by making the necessary advances that will allow us to continue providing the best possible services to residents and visitors. |
