Hi Ann-We used to have to recycle in NY and had to separate plastic, glass, newspaper etc from the regular garbage plus they had a $.05 refund on all soda/beer bottles either plastic, can and glass. It made for a lot less litter of those things on the highway. They don't do that in VA. Have a great weekend. <SMILE>

Darren,

This place has been in business for a LONG time....  I could not find a date but they have been in the same location for at least 20 years...  probably longer.  I live in a rural area without a recycling program.  As a family, we sort and take our recycling about 20 miles to help save the environment.  My favorite part is breaking the glass bottles I take.  I am careful not to hit any of the workers.  It is a great stress reliever......

Everyone should take an active part in this type of program.  Landfill space is quickly running out.  This fact effects everyone on the planet.

I cleaned out my basement two summers ago and I had collected SEVERAL boxes that came with electronic equipment (TVs computers etc).  All the Styrofoam packing material was still inside.  I didn't want to throw it in the landfill so I spent a lot of time looking for a local company that would accept it for recycling but none did.  SO, I took it all down to a mail center store and they were happy to take it since they have to BUY packing "popcorn" etc.  Thought I would share this since your town sign says "no Styrofoam".

We recyle here too and every single bottle has an extra cost to it.  Usually 5 cents extra.  Most people wait until they have a carload.   I can't be bothered because we usually don't have too many bottles.  What little I do have I give to someone at work so she can reap the benefits with her bottles.

Ann we don't always reduce or reuse, but we always Recycle.  My household has been doing that for a long time.

Pat,

It is a very good thing.  I wish we had recycling in our area but for now this is the place...

Sharon,

I would love to live somewhere they pay me to recycle...  Makes perfect sense and more people would participate.

Hi Ann, I recycle everything I can, it's amazing the volume of "recyclable materials" compared to trash  - I'm happy when I throw it in the bin and know it is not going to the landfill!

Debra,

In Michigan, they have return places for the bottles at the grocery stores.  Looked very convenient to me...

Yes they have them here too but the lines are always so long and the machines always have problems.

Ann, We can leave our bottles and cans out here not on recycling day but on an evening when some homeless people come around.  I'm sorry to say I've seen a few and they bring them to the grocery stores and can use the money.  I hope it helps both the environment AND these unfortunate people.

I wish our area was more sophisticated when it comes to plastic recycling... it's very limited.  On the other hand, we do pay a deposit on beverage containers and it helps bring a lot of them back.

I have seen people doing this as well in the city.  We live in a very rural area...
