The Dumb Friends League ~ Not So Dumb Afterall

By
Real Estate Agent

              The Dumb Friends League.

What an intriguing name.  A non-profit group started by Colorado Dermatologist Dr. Leslie Capin.

  • Between Paris Hilton and two movies "Legally Blonde" and "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" a craze began to own the tiny dogs featured.

Chihuahua's were hitting the market in record numbers.  As people found out these pint sized dogs were not for every family, they began to dump them at animal shelters.

  • Hundreds of discarded and unwanted Chihuahua's are being put down in California shelters. There are simply not enough homes in California to absorb them.

Dr. Capin won a contest with her Chihuahua for the cutest dog.  The prize was a million dollars.  Dr. Capin founded this organization to bring Chihuahuas out of California to states where they would stand a better chance for adoption.

The first of 3 chartered planes containing 100 rescued Chihuahua's hit the tarmac in Colorado recently.  For a small fee they can be adopted from the organization.

Bonnie - What dumb people to give up their pets - especially when they know someone would adopt them besides dumping them off at a shelter that kills the animals.

Great news about the hero who is rescuing them!

Nick Chihuahua's became a dime a dozen in Ca.  People found they were not great with children and could be high strung.  Yappy as well. There are simply not enough people in Ca wiling to adopt that breed.

I had two years ago and they were both sweet and cuddily.  I thought this was a great story.  Something posiitve being done for animals who are doomed to death.

I am a HUGE animal lover.  Hopefully those little pint size vixens will be adopted out quickly.

My animals are nicer than a lot of people I've met !!!!!!

I'm convinced my 100+ pound black Lab hates AR.  I swear he can see the log in screen and thinks, oh great, there she goes again.  Writing blogs and not paying attention to me. LOL

Melissa, I was glad to see someone doing something positive to save a few.  The problem is just overwhelming.

Bonnie - i dont think it was just the movies that caused this specific dog to become a dime a dozen in my state.

Hello Bonnie,

Dr. Capin is wonderful in what she did to help these little dogs.  What an amazing woman!  Thank you so much for your post & the link to the website.   Hopefully, many of these little dogs will find their forever homes in other states.

JP Was over breeding a problem before the Taco Bell commercials and the movies?  I'm not positive why this huge population of a specific breed exsits.

I am glad someone is trying to help them.

Rita,  I thought it was a great use for the money her dog won.  We have so many problems in this country. The animal population is taking it harder than most of us realize.

It is disgusting that people don't know this, perhaps now people will visit their own shelters and save dogs from certain death!

Actually, the Dumb Friends League was founded in 1910...not by Dr. Leslie Capin. Regardless, she did an amazing thing for the animals in the Denver area!
