Gas Drilling in PA on the Upswing in 2010

We in the Southern Tier/Central New York area have been painfully aware lately of the increased activity and controversy surrounding the Marcellus Shale Natural Gas drilling.  In today's Ithaca Journal, a very stark picture unfolds, noting that in 2009, over 191 wells were drilled in PA, just south of us, and 787 permits were issued by that state's DEC.  The most active counties are Susquehanna, Bradford and Tioga, and the wells have proven to be "fruitful" in some cases.  However, the controversy rages on, as mishaps have also accrued on the score sheets of the gas companies behind the drilling initiatives.  See the Ithaca Journal for the full story.

Yes, that would be good.  Will it cost us our local water supply though?  This is not a trade-off that I am optimistic about.
