House Catches Fire and Burns in Riverchase Community of Hoover AL

On Saturday evening, January 9th, a home on Tulip Poplar Drive in the Riverchase community of Hoover AL caught fire and burned.

A friend of mine lives on the street below and behind this house.  He had been out to dinner, returning to find his neighbors' home in flames and water pouring down the hill between their homes as the firemen worked to extinguish the fire.  By this time it had been burning about an hour.  When the fire started, a couple of neighbors heard an explosion and then noticed flames shooting up from under the back deck (where there is a gas grill).  The owner did not hear it, but looked out to see the deck engulfed in flames.  He quickly got his family out of the house with no one getting hurt, but the home suffered major damage.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Here is a photo of the rear of the home, where neighbors saw the first flames.

These are photos I took of the front of the home from different angles, showing the damage to the roof, blown out windows and charred interior.

This new Honda was parked in the basement garage and although it looks a mess, they are able to drive it.  They have washed it.....it was black when they pulled it out of the garage.  The fire burned upward and mainly in the center of the house; the damage to the basement was mostly smoke and water.

Hi Ann, Thank goodness the family got out and they are all well.  It's amazing how fast fire can consume a home and the damage it can do.  Very scary!

Wow.

Whenever you are having a bad day, you hear something like this and it makes you greatful that YOU are not going through the aftermath of a fire, earthquake, tornado.  Things happen so quickly that can change your like forever.

Did they ever figure out what caused the fire?

Mary - Very scary indeed!

Toni - From what I hear it is still under investigation.

Irene - They lost so much, but lucky to be safe......as quickly as the fire took over.....I hate to think of the outcome if this happened in the middle of the night when they were sleeping.

Frightening photos!  I'm glad they managed to remain safe!  It appears to be a really wonderful looking home.  I hope that when it is rebuilt, they can keep the charm it exudes - even with the damage from the fire.

Ann, it is a good thing that no one was hurt.  It certainly doesn't take long for a fire to destroy what was a beautiful home!

This is heartbreaking. We had a neighbor's home on our block burn to the ground a fews ago. It was devastating for them.Thankfully everyone was safe in both cases.

Ann - very bitter sweet for the family ... how terrible to loose your home, yet how fortunate that they were able to get out safely.

Hi Ann

Those poor people! It must be heartbreaking for them. I imagine they are very eager to find out how it started.

We nearly had this happen to us. Lucky we were home. Attic electrical fire. I now have a smoke alarm in my attic.
