I don't know how many of you have ever tried to start up a business, but let me tell you, it is not easy. I have a couple examples of this. A couple of my friends and I started a business a couple of years ago called "High Roller Custom." We started this business after we found that we had a knack for building high end gaming tables. An example of which can be seen to the right.
What started out as a wild idea to see if it could be done soon became a paid hobby. For a while we even toyed with the idea of quitting our current jobs and doing tables full time. Unfortunately the realities of the business world set in. It is very difficult to sell a service or product when virtually no one knows who you are.
The other dilemma was that we didn't have the necessary funds to advertise our product and gain recognition. That is what led to the ultimate downfall of our gaming table business. We still build them occasionally for someone who has seen one at a friend's house and was impressed, but as for making it a full time business? Probably won't happen for a while.
Basically, when you are unknown, the chances of success are dramatically reduced. Just like building a table, building a business is a time consuming and often times, a very tedious process. It takes a tremendous amount of work and dedication.
The only question is, is the end result worth the labor it takes to get there?
I would like to think so. I am in a similar situation right now. I am working for a property management company that does an amazing job in its field. I would say that we are the best property management company in my area hands down. The problem is that we just recently began to branch out into my area and are still virtually unknown to everyone out here. As a result, it had taken us quite a while to get the recognition that we deserve!
We have been slowly gaining momentum as word of mouth spreads throughout the valley but it will take a while before greatnesscan be achieved. It took me a while to realize that even if you have the best product around, that doesn't necessarily guarantee success. It has definitely been a learning process. I continue to look forward to the day when we will have reached our potential in my area and when I won't have to live from check to check barely scraping by.
Until then, nothing can stop me from working and dreaming.
