Luckily, the dismantling is just for repair, not for removal!
There is some major maintenance work going on at Faust Park in Chesterfield. Some tender loving care is required for the historic Faust Park Carousel as it is in the process of being dismantled for repairs. The problem is the main bearing inside the center of the ride is wearing out and needs to be fixed. In order to get to the part, the entire carousel must be taken apart.
Faust Park brought in Todd Goings, a renowned carousel expert to help with the repair process, "The project is more in disassembling and reassembling the Carousel than actually the work that will be done on the parts. It is just getting to the parts is the project."
The ride normally shuts down during the month of January, but this year, it will remain closed until March 5 while the repairs are made. The carousel with hand-carved horses was built 1921, a time when the nation had as many of 5,000 carousels. Going also says, "There are supposed less than 150 of these left in the nation and all these carousels are special at this point - a window into the past."
The project is so big that a wall had to be knocked down and a crane brought in to move the carousel.

Since May 9, 1987 the Dentzel carousel has charmed the thousands of children who have flocked to ride. The carousel was originally built in 1929 and had it's original home in the Forest Park Highlands - St. Louis' urban amusement park. The Highlands burned in 1963 but the carousel survived to be enjoyed to this day in Chesterfield's Faust Park.
