Name That Spider! Don't look if your skiddish!

Last night my wife and I practically ran into this little guy as he finished his making his web in front of our house.  He's a beautiful specimen that's about 5 inches long and quite healthy. One step to the right and my head would have been covered by our friend's web. Since I've been practicing my photography and editing skills, I thought I would try the macro setting on my canon to see what kind of effect I could get. I was pleasantly surprised by the details I captured in this shot. I'm sure the pest guys have their sprays loaded and ready to shoot our friend to oblivion! LOL! Enjoy! So... would you call this a garden spider?

It's not one of those brown wood spiders that are, like, the most deadly in the world is it?

What do you call him? (or her)

For a few years we had a few big black spiders with bright colors build the perfect webs by my front door, Fun to watch... but not to walk into!  But big in NJ for a spider is 2-3 inches!

Ralph - I believe it's a standard garden spider. Not poisonous.

Robert - I'm not sure, I believe he or she's a garden spider. The photo really makes him/her seem hairy!

Rebecca - LOL! That's a great name!

Caron, the spider was very patient with me as I flashed it to death.

Dawn, I changed the length to 5 inches after my wife gave me a rule! LOL!

Bill - I agree, it looks scary, but a important function of nature.

That's an orb weaver spider, and quite a beautiful one, too. They are not venomous, but if you run into a web at night and wind up with that thing crawling on your head....
