Several years ago, while vacationing in Israel, I was hit by a bus. I lost my footing, fell into the street onto the path of an oncoming bus that didn't see me. I had just a couple of seconds to assess the situation and knew that there was no way that I had enough time to get up and out of the way. I managed to roll out of the direct line of fire and instead of running over me, the edge of the bus's outer wheels rolled over my right upper side.
The six broken ribs that resulted were a blessing in comparison to what might have been. It taught me a lesson about how fragile we all are. It taught me to be thankful for all the little things, the daily miracles.
Most of us go about our daily business oblivious to all that we need to be thankful for - the ordinary little miracles of everyday life
- Getting up in the morning
- Making it through another day in good health
- Having enough food to eat
- Having clothes on your back
- A roof over our head
- Change in our pocket
- A family of our own
- The freedom to follow our dreams
The mundane is really the miraculous - but isn't it sad that it takes a tragedy of supernatural magnitude like the Haiti earthquake disaster or a major tsunami or a 9-11 to wake us up to this.
Let's all learn a lesson from the Haiti disaster. Instead of focusing on our problems let's remember when we wake up each morning to be thankful for all the ordinary everyday miracles that each of us is blessed with in abundance and count our blessings!
