UPCOMING EVENTS
January 23rd & 24th -- Spokane Symphony - Classics 5: Night and Day
Eckart Preu, conductor Vadim Gluzman, violin Sergei Prokofiev, Symphony No. 1 "Classical" Samuel Barber, Violin Concerto Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Symphony No. 4 During political chaos in Russia, Prokofiev looked back, meshing the tradition of clarity and formality with his renegade spirit. Written in a manner as "Haydn might have composed had he lived until the 20th century," his first Symphony is a masterpiece. His Classical symphony has truly become a "classic". Samuel Barber's most famous composition is his extraordinary Adagio for Strings. The qualities of that melodic-romantic style also carry the first two movements of his only violin concerto. Some of Mendelssohn's most successful orchestral compositions represent musical travelogues. When he traveled to Italy, he was captivated by the sights and sounds of this sunny country. The result was buoyant, sparkling, even wild music. Mendelssohn writes music full of excitement, energy and drama, with a dash of Neapolitan folk music. The Spokane Symphony P.O. Box 365 818 W.
