The Naked Trees of Winter

When we think of beautiful trees, we usually think of them fully dressed, that is, with leaves. But I've come to appreciate the beauty of naked trees in winter :)

This photo was tonemapped using 3 exposures, (+3, 0, -3), in Photomatix high dynamic range processing software. When tonemapping using this software, you can choose to use it to create a surreal effect to the image, or a realistic one. This one tends to the 'surreal' side.

Because this shot was not bracketed when I took it, I used the Photomatix ability to create 2 different exposures from a single 8 bit JPEG, converted to a 16 bit TIF file, and combined the 3 exposures for the processing.

There are those who are 'purists' about HDR, and believe it should only be used to bring out the dynamic range in a photo, and not to create an image that is 'other worldly' or fake looking, so to speak.

I think of photography as an art form that encourages creativity.

I ask you, who laughed at Monet, or Van Gogh about the lack of reality in their paintings? Well... maybe they did.

Well, who's laughing at Van Gogh now???  ;)

The following two photos were taken in Red Rock Canyon, Colorado Springs

Debi, I am one who likes natural too but who can ever argue with art? It takes natural to the next level.

Hi Debi, Love your naked trees, your photography really is art. To tell the truth about trees, I like them much better when they're dressed!

I have more reluctance going out and taking pictures, when weather isn't simply gorgeous, and life isn't in full bloom.  But your trees above, demonstrate we should embrace special beauty year round.  Afterall, trees in leaf - or without, are showing us the great circle of life!

Nice images, Debi. I have done a little experimenting with Photomatix. It has produced great results for me when just playing . . . but I haven't gotten decent results for real estate photography. Seems like a whole other can of worm!

Hi Myrl- I know what you mean.  But the funny thing is, each time I go out I find something interesting. Or a different way of looking at the same old thing :)

Hi Deena - With RE photos, you need to tone down the whole process quite a bit. Just use it to enhance the scene, not alter it. You'll get the hang of it!

We don't have many naked trees of winter down here. Most of our trees are pines, palms, and eucalyptus, which grow year-round. I loved taking pictures of naked trees back when I lived in Texas.
