How do you pick an agent for a Referral?

This is a great post on receiving your unfair share of Agent-to-Agent referrals.

Original content by Gita Bantwal

We are fortunate to be networking on Active Rain. I can now refer an agent in any part of the country with confidence that the agent will do a good job.

In the past I used to look up a referral directory and look for an office in the town and look for the name of an agent with designations . Now I can do more than that. I can read some of the blogs and get to understand the agent. I already have a network of associates in many parts. I try to read posts by as many agents as possible and comment on the posts. If an agent is just posting listings it does not help. The agent may be number one in points in the region on Active rain, but I might prefer someone with less points , whose posts show they care about the client. I would like to know that the  agent feels that the client is number one, that the agent returns phone calls.

If I am sending a buyer referral and see only listings , how am I to know that the agent enjoys working with buyers?

I like to see localism posts about the community . It shows the agent knows the area well. It gives me an idea of the market area the agent services.

I like to refer to agents with designations . It shows that they have invested in the profession. When I refer an agent, points are important but I may pick number three or four and not number one or two . It depends on the type of posts .

First, I remember people from their comments here on AR. If they comment often, I have probably gotten to know them. If it's an unfamiliar area, I would also check out their blog. People who just post listings aren't telling anything about their skill set as agents, so I would move on to another person who invested themselves.

David-  I completely agree that it is nice to know that the person you are referring someone to is going to be a good fit for that particular client.  We all are unique, as are our clients, and if you are like me, fitting personalities and needs is most important.  Afterall, the referred agent will be a direct reflection on you.  Thanks for sharing!

I've had great luck finding agents on AR. Last year I did three referrals with one agent who did great customer service for all of them. I agree with Sharon that comments and smart blog posts are what I look for first. Points aren't the key. Finding someone who's a local expert with a buyer focus matters a lot more to me. AR is hands down the best way to find agents in areas that are remote from your home territory.

Thank you for your blog. It makes sense and will help me as I consider what to blog about in our community and to put in a lot more thought into each blog. I had not even thougth of looking for an agent via Active Rain. I need one in Nanaimo BC in a few months so will start to look around for that person.

I start with trying to match people...but I also look for designations, and years in the business!!  You also have the benefit of having a large nationwide brokerage that you work for!

Active Rain has been a great source of both inbound and outbound referrals for me. And we can't forget those great agents that not only share here on ActiveRain but will also answer the phone to answer questions.
