Give a HOOT about your Tweets: HootSuite vs. TweetDeck

Someone asked me recently if I preferred HootSuite or TweetDeck, and the answer is that I use them BOTH. I keep them both open and minimized at all times.

I prefer HootSuite to post tweets that I want to schedule. For example, on Sunday mornings I try to schedule tweets for events for the coming week. This morning I scheduled tweets for upcoming Martin Luther King events and plays and community meetings - happenings that will occur during the week. Now, I can cross that off my "to do" list. There is an area where you can type in your tweet and another box that you can paste a URL in to that you wish to shorten or shrink. If you wish to schedule the tweet, you select "Send Later" and it will allow you to select a date and time for your tweet to go out!

However, I prefer TweetDeck to better see the conversations that are going on. As in HootSuite, you can add or modify columns (topics) you wish to view. You can see what all your friends are saying and easily converse with them. You can type in a tweet and select the "auto shorten" box to the right, but I don't believe you can schedule a tweet for a later date through TweetDeck.

TweetDeck screen shot

In the TweetDeck screen shot, you can see that I am viewing what my friends are posting in the first column; "mentions" in the 2nd column; what's going on in Tulsa in the 3rd column; what's going on at Active Rain in the 4th column; and direct messages in the 5th column. If I want to know what people are saying about the Google Nexus phone, I would add #nexus column. Twitter logo

I'm sure I'm not using either program to its full potential, so I'd love to hear your comments about what you use and why!

Thanks Lori.  I really didn't know how to jump into Twitter so I'm following your advice and starting with watching the conversations on TweetDeck.

Lori - What do you think about the latest version of HootSuite?  It rivals Tweetdeck in the stream area now.  Very easy on the eyes!

Thanks for the compare/contrast post.  If someone could create an application that combines the best of both worlds, we'd have a winner!

I think I am (and always will be) a bigger fan of Tweedeck!  I like how much customization I can do and now with the ability to schedule Facebook updates, I can make sure that I get some business in with all the social posts that I do from my mobile throughout the day.  It takes a combination of several apps to get the job done right with Twitter....but I'm sold on it.  Over $30k in GCI this year DIRECLTY from tweeting....

Thanks Lori.  I have never used HootSuite but will give it a try.  Been working with TweetDeck for about three weeks.  The layout is easy and I am just getting around to formatting my columns.

Doug, TweetDeck has made a lot of improvements since I wrote this post. I hardly use HootSuite anymore.

I don't use HootSuite at all because they started charging way too much - I manage more than a dozen accounts & when you manage that many they want $1,000!  Oh well - I like my TweetDeck.  :)

Lori, Thank you for the post. I use hootsuite for my social media, but I have never tried tweetdeck before. I think it's time that I do that. I'm @VikingRentals on Twitter if you would like to follow me :)

I'm sure both applications have changed since this was originally written - for example, you can now schedule tweets through TweetDeck!

Did not know HootSuite charged - hardly use that anymore!

Great post. Love it.  I never considered using both.  I am still a novice Tweeter, but this was uber-helpful; especially the screenshots.  Kudos and thanks.

I've used both on and off and mostly use TweetDeck--the exception is on my iPad since TweetDeck has an iPhone app only while HootSuite had an iPad app.
