Definition of a Liberal

  • (Then) Sen. John F. Kennedy
Acceptance of the New York Liberal Party Nomination

    September 14, 1960

    excerpt from his speech........

If by "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

I believe, the faith in our fellow citizens as individuals and as people that lies at the heart of the liberal faith. For liberalism is not so much a party creed or set of fixed platform promises as it is an attitude of mind and heart, a faith in man's ability through the experiences of his reason and judgment to increase for himself and his fellow men the amount of justice and freedom and brotherhood which all human life deserves.

This is an important election -- in many ways as important as any this century -- and I think that the Democratic Party and the Liberal Party here in New York, and those who believe in progress all over the United States, should be associated with us in this great effort. The reason that Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman and Adlai Stevenson had influence abroad, and the United States in their time had it, was because they moved this country here at home, because they stood for something here in the United States, for expanding the benefits of our society to our own people, and the people around the world looked to us as a symbol of hope.

    Political Meaning of Liberal Progressive

    By Al Vick contributing writer

    Individual Freedom

  • Individual freedom is at the heart of progressive philosophy. In September 1960 John F. Kennedy, in defending liberalism said, "I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose, in human liberty as the source of national action..."
  • Origins

  • Progressive liberalism originated during the Reformation period of the 16th century. Protestant reformers of the time stressed the importance of individual thought and action.
  • The Progressive Movement

  • The U.S. progressive movement of the early 20th century highlighted liberal philosophy. Achievements during that era include the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, the establishment of government conservation programs, and passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.
  • Current Progressive Ideology

  • Today, liberals generally support the creation of a universal health-care system, the right of gays to marry, abolition of the death penalty, and relaxed immigration policies.
  • Theories/Speculation

  • David Sirota, in writing for the "Huffington Post," states his belief that liberals and progressives are different. Liberals, he claims, spend money to solve problems while progressives prefer the use of government intervention.

Odd.  I find it ironic that Liberals are so entrenched in:

I believe, the faith in our fellow citizens as individuals and as people that lies at the heart of the liberal faith. For liberalism is not so much a party creed or set of fixed platform promises as it is an attitude of mind and heart, a faith in man's ability through the experiences of his reason and judgment to increase for himself and his fellow men the amount of justice and freedom and brotherhood which all human life deserves.

Now we see liberals attacking individualism in favor of group identity.  This would be exemplified by Hillary Clinton say:

"We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good." -- Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, June 28,, 2004.

"We must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society."  Hillary Clinton, 1993

Seems to me to not be all that faithful towards the individual.

Almost as odd as you taking a quote from Hllary in 04 and 93 and using them to represent all liberals.

Linda Mae, your research is impeccable!  Is it possible for one to be a progressive liberal?  Or a liberal progressive?

Lane* let's not forget "it takes a village" to raise children.

Interesting you use JFK on MLK day when JFK's AG * Bobby * instructed J.Edgar Hoover to get DIRT on MLK to discredit him with the African American followers and bring him down.  They could only find some sexual indiscretions with both JFK and Bobby knew Hoover knew about in THEIR OWN private lives. That's when JFK made a deal with MLK!!

Tchaka, would you prefer comments from the President?  The first quotes that came up when I put in individual and liberal was the Hillary quotes.  There are plenty more.  Look at what Congress is doing.  The Democrats are all about groups... even at the expense of individuals.

In fact, individual liberties are perfectly acceptable to sacrifice according to modern liberals... if it is beneficial to a group that favors liberals...

It is interesting that Woodrow Wilson is pictured as a model progressive. Well, that's not really true because he was a model progressive. However, what is interesting is the placement of he quote directly below his picture. Wilson was one of the least respectful presidents of individual liberties we have had. He developed his own propoganda machine. He had businesses shut down (as did Roosevelt), he had his 4 Minute Men - "volunteers" who were given 4 minute talking points to take to public meetings, his CPI, his abuse of the first amendment using the post office to shut down any publication with an opposing view of the government, his jailing of 10'000's who spoke out against WWI, the administration, etc., his treatment of women suffragettes until he found it inevitible and politically expedient to change his position.

Classic progressives, which Hillary Clinton classifies herself as, admired facism, especially Mussolini but also Hitler. They favored, and still do, the state over the person, the collective over the indiidual. They were in favor of eugenics, to use birth control not to free women but to control the reproduction of "undesireables", people of the wrong background, including race, people of the wrong economic class, people not smart enough to reproduce.

If you look at everything JFK had to say, you will see that there is a tremendous gulf between what he believed and the current forms of liberalism and especially the democrat party.

    Mike.

Thank you for taking the time with your prolific comment about the realities of past Political leaders....

It is quite apparent that Not only has the democratic party evolved beyond the Kennedy years BUT the Republican party has deteriorized beyond recognition.....

As always it is a two way street.....

you are quite correct about Woodrow Wilson and i pondered deleteing his picture BUT the post is not only about Liberals or liberal progressives but "Progressives" as well ...there was a vast difference in Woodrow and Theodore's politics....

Theodore Roosevelt's 'Square Deal' and Woodrow Wilson's 'New Freedom,' were both programs of reform. Roosevelt covered more areas of reform than Wilson (who focused mainly on economy), and was more of a progressive than Wilson was.

The labels are not only misused but inaccurate.

By a true definition, I am a Liberal and a Progressive.

I do not want status quo (which would be by definition, conservative)

I want change and progress. That makes me Liberal and Progressive. I would argue that it would be conservative to want to keep a large government. It would be conservative to favor Big Business. It would be conservative to want less personal freedoms and more regulation. I am not a Conservative.

I want change. Obama is conservative and progressive. He wants more of the same, really. More government, more taxes, more regulation, more war, more control. What is so different about that. What has he really done so differently than Bush? It should make you all wonder who is really pulling the strings, because we had a conservative and a liberal doing the same things

Maybe this has already been said.
