Log Blog--No Self Propel in Sales

Real Estate Sales Representative with Keller Williams Realty--Boerne Hill Country

Before the days of "self-propelled" lawn mowers...we actually had to push (meaning use brute force) our lawnmowers.  For some of you "youngins" there was also a lawn mower that didn't have a motor.  I have a one inch horizontal scar on my knee (from when I tripped and fell on our mower) to prove it.  A very vivid mental picture of me pushing our out-dated-two-ton mower up the steep hill in front of our home has crossed my mind several times this past week...actually the entire year of 2009.

I have recently come to the conclusion that there is no self-propel in sales.  It will always be an uphill push, in many respects, in a shifting, ever-changing market.  So...how do you mow through days where it feels like you are on the perpetual hill of going no-where fast?  My conclusion is...you just keep pushing.  It's okay to stop for a glass of lemonade along the way...but the ones who keep "mowing" are gonna end up with a beautiful lawn.  If I give up...the grass will get tall and the weeds will set in and I won't have the satisfaction of a job well done.

Wherever there's an uphill push...there's also a downhill ride.  Right now I am in the push of my life...but in time...I will be enjoying the downhill ride.

Push Mower, we had one growing up luckily my Dad, not the best lawn grower. We are pushing here. Nice horsey!

Fantastic analogy Claire!  Nice job!

I can clearly remember thinking that pushing a manual mower up the "hill" on the side of our family home was the hardest thing I would ever do in my life.

Ha!  Not even close.

You have done a wonderful job of characterizing the current market conditions and inspiring us to keep pushin'!

Claire, you said it all...'you just keep on pushing'. We can't give up. Sometimes the world's best results come after some very dark days.

Hi Claire~  Sometimes just when you feel you can't push anymore, you realize you've made it!  But, then you realize that it is time to just start all over again!

Good post.  And when I bought my first home, I also bought one of those reel mowers.  It did a great job...  Thanks for the reminder.

I love your analogy. I think it holds true for most of us- excluding the busy REO listing agents!

I just loved this and your thought process! I am a big believer in two mindsets for this business and they have served me well over the last 15 years:

I can't change the direction of the wind but I can sure adjust the sails!

I can't change you but I can change how I react to you!

Best of luck and just KEEP MOVING! I will help you all I can!

Claire,  Loved the post.  Heard that home sales in your neck of the woods aren't too bad.  Happy 2010, maybe that downhill ride will start this year.

James and Don...I am with you 100% on the downhill ride.  Can't wait!

Cheryl--You're welcome...  Love your doggies!  Are those goldens?

John--they are great fat burners...especially in the Texas heat.  eeeeeeeesh.

Chris--You don't know what you are missin with the motorless ones.  :)  They actually have revived an updated version of motorless lawn mowers for those you are truly "green".  Btw...love your dog.

David--it helps when you have little or no lawn to mow.  As for the horse in my pic...it's not mine...although I wouldn't mind having one like him.  He was a beautiful rescued mustang horse on the LBJ ranch near Johnson City.  We do have two horses of our own...Freckles and Buckshot.  Great horses.

Vic--Isn't it something that the things we think in our younger days that will surely be our death are the things we look back on and say..."Gee...remember when????"

Vicki--No doubt!  The darkest times usually come before the biggest breakthroughs.  With the way things are going today...we are all going to have an amazing breakthrough ahead!

Vicki--It's funny you would say that...  Just this morning when I opened my eyes and realized it was a new day I thought..."Oh boy...  Here we go again!"  Thankfully, I am a firm believer that the Lord gives us new mercies for each day.  So...I am re-charged and ready to go!

Lane...You're welcome...

Todd and Devona--Hang in there...I know your best days are ahead!

Elizabeth--Wow...love those lines.  I plan to type them out and put them over my desk.  Thanks!

Roland--You are absolutely right.  Gary Keller says...you have to be in the market to take advantage of the market.  Same way in business...you have to be in there...pushing that lawn mower...if you think you are going to get anywhere.  It ain't gonna come to you all by itself.

Barbara--Things are pretty good this way...but we have plenty of realtors and on-site agents vieing for the same business.  I am believing for an amazing downhill ride soon!

Just remember, as you are pushing, you are actually building your skills, and building your strength.  Just don't forget to sharpen the blade every once in a while!

I'll bet they didn't have much St. Augustine grass in those days! Seriously, that grass would just laugh at a push mower. It's so thick a car can park on it and not kill it!

George--Good thought...  No pain...no gain.  My skills are being sharpened here at Active Rain on a daily basis, thanks to folks like you.

Frank and Sharon--LOL...ain't that the truth.  Coming from the midwest to Texas...adjusting to St. Augustine was a tough one...especially when mowing.

Hi Claire,

  I really love your analogy!

And for better or worse, this is one push mower job that can't be passed along to a kid from the neighborhood.  Is it alright if I just do the front yard today, and the backyard next weekend?  Guess not.

 Nice picture!

Claire when I was younger my best friend used this type of lawn mover. I liked mowing her yard. I have been pushing up hill for a long time I think this year is going to be amazing.

Tim, Frank and Mandy...  Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your kind remarks.  I actually had a couple days off and have been enjoying the lemonade part of my life.  I do look forward to the down hill ride...actually...even the hope of a downhill ride has kept me motivated.  Blessings to all of you the year ahead!

Hi Claire...We need to be self-propelled in real estate just as we do in every other aspect of our lives.  We chart our own course.

This reminder we can all use.  Thanks.
