NATURAL DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

By
Real Estate Agent

In light of the recent disaster in Haiti, here is a list, meant to be a guide, of things needed to sustain yourself, and family:

  • Nonperishable food and bottled water for at least 3 days
  • First-aid kit
  • Prescription medication for a few days,  a list of ailments, doctor's name and phone number
  • Cell phone, flashlight(s), AM/FM radio hearing aids if needed and extra batteries
  • A change of clothes, protective clothing and comfortable shoes
  • Sanitation supplies
  • Extra pair of glasses
  • A place to meet could be a nearby park, an open area or the next city
  • A contact person outside of the disaster area could be as far away as another state.
  • A whistle to call for help
  • Extra pair of car keys
  • Credit or debit card, and cash
  • Special items for baby, the elderly or disabled family member
  • Pet food for pets, if any

IF THERE IS A DISASTER

  • Listen to your portable radio
  • In the even of an earthquake, prepare for aftershocks
  • If you evacuate, leave a note where you can be found
  • If instructed shut off water, gas and electricity before leaving

Each family head must make decisions as to what is in the best interest of their family.  Please make sure that each family member knows where to meet, and the address and phone number of the contact person in case family members are separated.

Dee, That is a great disaster preparedness list for people to follow and good advice regarding a meeting place away from the home.

Dee...so nice to "see" folks from Reliberation.
This is a good posting to remind all to be prepared in this way. One never knows what the future will bring.  We carry a smaller set-up in each of our cars; however, if the trunks are not able to be opened--we may have a moment of stress.

If you put any medication away, including prescription medication, in your emergency kit, make sure you know the expiration date of the medication and freshen your emergency kit when necessary.

If you have one of the newfangled keyfobs that sets the car alarm, opens the doors and trunk, etc., know that extra keyfobs are quite expensive, and you usually can't get them on a moment's notice, so plan in advance.

Hi Wanda,
Thank you, if you want, add to it and pass it on.

Barb & Sal,
Now that Reliberation is gone, I do hope more folks show up on AR.   I've seen one or two but not enough.  Two cars one trunk you're good to go.  I don't think both trunks will be inaccessible.

Jim,
Good advice, thanks for sharing.

Dee,  I found that cash was most important when we had the hurricanes.  The electricity was out and the credit/debit machines didn't work anywhere.  You couldn't get gas or food without cash.  Great list you prepared.

Elyse,
As they say "cash is king"!  If the list is helpful to you, I'm sure it will help others too, so feel free to add to it and pass it on.

Thank  you Jennifer.  The disaster in Haiti, recent fires and rains in my own back yard not to mention we are also in earthquake country, we should be prepared for survival.  It comes down to whether we are prepared or not.

Hi Dee - Excellent advice.  I think many of never expect any local disasters.  I haven't even been able to find matches in the house the last few days.  Guess I better get that list going.

Jenny,
Its true, we don't expect disasters but we should be prepared.  Make a list and pass it on your family, friends and clients will be happen you shared it with them.
