It's a Dog's Life!

Spanish Banks Dog Beach

I recently adopted an old dog from the SPCA.  While I originally wanted a puppy, I now know that adopting an older dog brings about a set of joys that I would not have known from a much younger dog.  My "puppy" is a 9 year old rottweiler/ lab mix.  It is through his eyes (and his love of the water and stick chasing) that I have found one of my favourite places in Vancouver.

Vancouver has fabulous paths for walking, jogging and biking and they circle around the entire waterfront - from Stanley Park in the downtown core to the edge of Point Grey in Vancouver West.  There are tons of dog friendly off leash areas but recently my dog and I have ended up spending a lot of our time at the Spanish Banks Dog Beach.  There, you will find long stretches of rock and sandy beach to throw sticks,  chase Frisbees and play with other dogs.  The views are spectacular - you can see out to the Pacific Ocean, the north shore mountains, and the downtown city core.   During the week, we almost always have the place to ourselves.  On a lovely Saturday morning (as it was when the pictures below were taken) it is a bit busier.

I recommend you check it out.  The scenery is spectacular.  For those of you visiting with dogs, I have attached a list of our off leash dog parks.  The Spanish Banks Dog Beach is number 22 on the map.  Have fun!

How fun! You're lucky to have these areas, and they're absolutely gorgeous. BTW, thanks for adopting - the shelters are being overrun lately because more and more people are unable to afford their pets.

Vancouver is on my list of places to visit one day! Thanks again for sharing ;)

That's kind of a sweet write up - it was nice of you to adopt an older dog -  I'm not really a doggie person - but I am a beach person !

Stacie and Liz...thank you so much for dropping by my space here on Active Rain.  I really appreciate your kind comments!  Yes.  Adopting an older dog is something that folks often say was a nice thing to do....but honestly, he has made himself a cherished part of the family so quickly.  We can't imagine life without him....so in hindsight, we are not sure if we did him a favour or he did a favour for us!

Best wishes for a fabulous 2010 to you both!  Margret :-)

Hi Margret -- Wow, what a fabulous place for dog and owner, I would LOVE to have a place as visually stunning with wide open spaces.  He is one lucky dog to have you and it sounds like it's a mutually rewarding relationships.  Dogs give so much more to us then we ever give to them.  There is just something special about a dog.

Please see the recent Regina dog shockings and share this vital public service with your appreciative followers. Many thanks.

Greetings! Unfortunately, some dog walkers discover a danger, only sadly, when victimized. Please see the recent canine shockings/electrocution on StreetZaps and view our safety guidelines. I confer with Con Edison's Stray Voltage and Public Affairs Units; The National Electric Code showcases the site. Shock victim, Aric Roman's, case first appeared on StreetZaps in 3/09 and is in pre-trial at Con Edison (please see Testimonies, Safety) as he is permanently disabled. Thank you in advance and stay safe!

In appreciation and with best regards,
