Well, at least here in Florida it is! When I was asking my awesome Allstate insurance agent and friend, Erica Clark about why these quotes are so high, she responds, " Hey, this is Florida!"
Each one of my kids knew the rules in my house and did not like them one little bit and that was you do not get your own car until you are 18! Wow, what a tough mom! Oh well, it was my rule.
So now my youngest daughter turned 18 and wanted to buy her own car. I was very impressed that she saved up $1500 all on her own to buy a car. I did not want her to buy one of those all run down cars that you see for sale on the side of the road. We went to the same Chevy dealer that I went to for my son's car. Tirzah even wanted to be on the loan all by herself. Instead of telling her I knew she would not qualify I let her try on her own first. Of course the finance guy comes back and says the bank wants me to co sign. So I did. We found a great little Certified pre owned Chevy Cobalt for her. She was so excited about getting her new car!
She could not take the car home with her right away because she still had to find insurance she could afford.
Now, check this out! Her car was $9,000, her payments are $230 per month.
Guess what her insurance quotes were coming in at? More than double her car payments!
The insurance quotes for no accidents and straight A college student, who by the way, has been going to college since she was 14 years old were $450 to $630 dollars PER MONTH!! YEIKKKS!
Tirzah was devastated to say the least! She was crying, "How can my insurance be more than my car?"
I told her to focus on her desire to find car insurance that she could afford. Her budget was $ 320 per month at the most.
We then tried to get her put on our policy but we have extensive coverage and and umbrella policy that would have to match in order to be on our policy. Again, this put it out of the ball park for her. So we checked on line but the problem with on line insurance quotes is that they do not have the proper questions for a first time insurance person. Without a 6 month prior insurance history she was being penalized as if she had let her insurance lapse. So it is back to the phones for us. Nothing like the personal touch, right? We finally found a policy and company for her that was able to get her insurance at $220 per month, less than her car payment by ten dollars!
Yeah! Perseverance pays off big time! I am so proud of her for not giving up!
Here is a photo of Tirzah and her new car with her little brother who is just as excited as she is!
Florida is a tough state with insurance from auto policies to homeowners policies.
Our State's Office Of Insurance has been making slow progress in this area but there is still much more work to do.
Get in touch with your local and state officials to let them know you want insurance reform.
It is really sad that young people are caught in the middle like this. The few bad drivers make it hard on all people under the age of 25 for auto insurance.
Well, we got through it. She had been living on Palm Beach Atlantic University's campus for the past 2 + years so a car was not an issue. This semester she wants to live at home and drive to school. It is about a 30 - 40 minute drive to the University from where we live.
With us having 8 children, we have 3 more to go with the car thing!
