Wow! Finally a break from the death grip old man winter has had on the Crystal Coast. It's been so cold that until the other day I was too wimpy to even take my dog for a walk in Emerald Isle. Instead we've been taking really quick, short walks around the house. Thankfully though, the cold weather has lightened up a bit for a short time.
I was beginning to wonder why I still live here on the Crystal Coast. I mean last week we were not any warmer than my old stomping grounds in St. Louis and Chicago. Although we did have less snow than they did out there. However, I actually saw the saltwater behind my house in Cedar Point with a frozen crust on a couple mornings, YIKES!
I've really been slacking on blogging and maintaining my web presence in general. I wish I had a good excuse, but I'm afraid it really amounts to laziness, lack of motivation, and a few other weak excuses. Once you start blogging, maintaining a website, or both you really shouldn't let them get stale.
Back at the beginning of the year it occurred to me I had let one of my beloved domain names expire OOPS! Luckily godaddy.com will hold it for you for a short time. However, letting your site deteriorate to a parked page REALLY hurts your rankings. I used to rank 4th or 5th for some pretty key terms. But since I let the entire domain lapse Google really put the boots to me. Now I don't show up AT ALL for these prized terms, and quite frankly it hurts.
So what did I do? Well I surely am not giving up. Instead I renewed both the name and the hosting for another 3 years. Previously I had only been doing it for a year at a time. I think the search engines put a decent amount of weight as to how long your domain is registered for. By doing it for 3 years, they all know I'm going to at least be around for 3 years, and look like less of a fly-by-night shop.
I've also pledged to myself that I will keep a new article up there at least weekly, if not more frequently. Its a small market here on Emerald Isle, and the Crystal Coast, but its definitely a tough one. So wish me luck in 2010 just as I wish all the rainmakers a lot of luck this year.
