Gettysburg Understands Fear
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”
Okay I understand that when you think about Gettysburg Pa you are not thinking about Franklin D. Roosevelt, but there is a lot to learn from this famous quote, and it can be associated with the Battle of Gettysburg as well as the current Gettysburg real estate market. This quote was uttered on March 4th 1933 during FDR’s inaugural address. In it FDR also made some closely related comments that fit the times in 1933, yet interestingly also fit when referencing our current economic dilemma.
FDR was well aware of the dire situation that the United States faced, yet he knew that he had to provide some kind of hope, some kind of direction, he nailed when he said “When there is no vision the people will perish”. FDR was careful to keep things in perspective saying “Only a foolish optimist can deny the dark realities of the moment”. It is amazing how pertinent that insight could be applied today.
It would be wonderful if the leaders of today could muster just a hint of that sort of insight that FDR displayed. While I am not a huge FDR fan, I do believe after reading his speeches from the time, he was the right man at the right time. He demanded a can do attitude from all that he worked with. He refused to allow himself to be intimidated by the situation he was thrust into, or the physical limitations that he himself had to deal with.
I think as Realtors if we combine the messages in those three quotes we could do much to help ourselves deal with the current market situation we are in. If we realistically acknowledge the current situation, realize that yes it is a fearful situation, yet understand that if we face the fear, and continue to keep at it with a keen focus; we can remain optimistic and build on every small improvement until this is over. There is just so much to learn from the past as well as past leaders. Hang in there…
