Drink your milk...and where are those cows from that made it?

Do you know where your milk comes from where you live now? In Houlton Maine, we are lucky to enjoymaine dairy products, houlton farms dairy milk from local cows happy in what they do. The milk products are as fresh as you can get because the dairy milk, butter, cottage cheese, sour cream, heavy cream, egg nog, ice cream is not trucked in to Houlton Maine from three states away. It was in the cow yesterday or this morning when you reach into your dairy case tonight on the way home from work. Skippers was a west coast fish restaurant that used the slogan, "The only fish fresher are still swimming in the sea". That's the way it is with our local milk. You can not get any fresher, or a higher quality standard.

In Houlton Maine we have been spoiled by Houlton Farms Dairy and when you take a trip, have to drink another brand, it makes you stop in conversation and realize, somethings fishy. The local milk just tastes so much better, fresher in Houlton Maine / Aroostook County.

No BST growth hormones maybe part of it.

The joy of having one of only four Maine dairies in our backyard guarantees the freshness another big component.

But maybe the involvement of HFD in our local community from little league sponsorship, soap box derby cars, and the fact they hand you a fresh ice cream cone as the Houlton Maine 4th of July parade heads down Main Street is another reason. They give back. It is a two way street requiring locals to reach for the orange, black and white cartons that guarantee freshness.

Heck, I'll see an empty space when shopping at a local grocery where I reach up and pull down the next milk jugs to make sure the cooler is up to speed, out front. Stocked for a quick pick and run of our local dairy products. That is loyalty, a e mooers milk wagon, houlton maineappreciation for a product none of us in Houlton ME or Aroostook County ever want to lose.

Years ago, lots of small local dairies did deliveries any way they had to in Houlton Maine.

This sleigh used when the milk wagon could not get thru the Maine snow.

My grandparents on both sides were Maine dairy, potato farmers.houlton farms dairy milk plant

Locally we know where our food comes from. Have good wholesome locally grown products from our friends and neighbors who raise it for our family kitchen tables. It's not like that everywhere outside of "OZ".

Also, Houlton Farms Dairy has dairy bars around Aroostook County that win or lose, we end up at with our little league teams on a summer evening. To enjoy some ice cream locally made within our community. HFD real butter is to die for and making its way in to the Bangor Maine market too. People stock up when they are home to visit to take back home out of state.

When you reach for the orange, black and white HFD product, you help local Maine farmers stay on those family farms too. It's a win win win all the way around. Bottom line is, you want the best milk product for your family. And will not settle, will not serve anything less to your loved ones.

Milk wagons, milk sleighs or pungs. Like local soda bottlers, there were quite a few. To have our own dairy with locally grown milk is special. We are spoiled..but the milk never is. Why anyone would reach for anything locally but the orange, black and white symbol of freshness is insane, beyond me. Local and fresh versus who know where it comes from, and from what factory farm where cows are not happy, humanely treated. Our local Maine cows are appreciated. And they know it.

We have cows here but I don't think any of our milk is local and never has been.

When you reach for that plastic or paper milk container, where it came from is something folks should, are starting to worry about. Is it the freshest it can be? Not if I am in Maine and it comes from upstate New York. Canadians across the border from Houlton Maine tap in to the milk train big time and haul the white gold across the lines with turkeys too. If a local store has a sale on turkeys here, you better get in to gear. They disappear and head to the land of the waving high red maple leaf flag.
