This got me heated!

Temperature ReadingEyes, nose and ears are three senses most used during a home inspection. Early on I purchased a digital infrared thermometer to test ovens, water temperature and other applications so I didn't have to rely on touch.

FloorRecently I "stumbled" upon something I could not have seen as it was hidden under carpet. Can you guess what's under this carpet?

Hey Vince, my guess is carpet pad or mold.  Am I right?

Liz - No mold here. I can't say whether or not pad was installed.

Think about the location and heat.

Subfloor? :)  Missing heat register at that location most likely

That's right Charles. Carpet installers carpeted right over it.

A good reason why people need to be crosstrained in other industries upon which their work could have an impact.

I bought a house once and I couldn't find the exterior vent hood for the dryer flue. "It should be right there" I exclaimed. It was, except that the stucco guys apparently had removed the vent hood and stuccoed right over that nasty old open hole.

Nice find!  How did you find that?  Were you looking for a missing heat register?

Russel - Good point. I remember when I started out in construction. I could frame a wall but I didn't know much about how components are intended to work together.

Reuben - Actually my foot found it.

Ian - Heated carpet! hmm.. not a bad idea.

The carpet looks new but I wonder how long it had been like that.

That's a great story.  And a great find.  I suspect you were also thinking something is missing here.  Every room used as a living space needs a source of heat, not including a fireplace.  Exceptions include things like half baths and hallways.  Great post.

Thank you,
