No cell service here...should I move???  Dream Home Redesign and Home Staging Oakhurst CA

I am joking about moving, but unfortunately NOT joking about cell service.  Do I hate it, you betcha, but verizon (the ONLY local carrier) has been talking about upgrading their services for at least the last five years and everything remains the same.

Does it hurt my business?  Yes, I suppose it does in more than one way, especially since I am a home-based business.

Do people understand....absolutely NOT.  I did have one agent emphatically tell me that I needed to move and all that I could do was consider the source and nod.

Sometimes it's nice to be unconnected but if would be a lot better if it were by choice, not by NO CHOICE.

SO, if you meet up with a client or service provider that does not have cell service PLEASE it does happen and we just have to smile (%$^#), adjust and hope that you will too.

Clearly the kids and grandkids do not like to come to visit.

Living in the hometown of Billie Crutchfield has it's advantages. They have cel BOOSTER antennas that cost about $400 and when we put one on our roof, no problemo.  They are cel provider specific; however, I no longer have dropped Sprint calls and have signal throughout my house which has a metal roof...

Thanks for the information Wallace.  I will have to contact Verizon to see if a booster is available.  Funny that they never mention it when I call to complain...hmmmm.

That must be frustrating, Ginger! I bet it is an adjustment for your grandkids and kids! I'm old enough that I'm not used to so much technology, but I feel lost if I've forgotten my cel phone.

Yes Cathy it is, but it's even more frustrating that outsiders actually don't believe me.  If I drive about 2 miles I can get a weak signal, 5 miles for a good signal.  Just one of the joys of living in our beautiful area.  Thanks for stopping and commenting.

I wouldn't have believed you could be without cell service in California.  I used to have a problem inside my house and I would have to step outside during calls.  I lost many calls...it was very frustrating.  My husband bought a signal booster which involved putting an antennae in our attic and a small little thingy in my kitchen cabinet and now the phone works fine.  Sounds like your nearest signal may be too far for that solution, though.

Hi Sharon.  Aren't you in Vegas?

If I step out onto my front deck and stand just right, on my left foot and cock my head to the left, then maybe I can dial out...but the signal will never last.  Thanks for adding more info. about the booster.  I will look into that.  Actually I can ALMOST see the cell tower on top of a far-away mountain BUT that's just not enough, I guess.

Sharon, I live in a rural area with poor cell service. Can you get any cell signal outside your house --- holidng your phone outside an upstairs window, out on a deck or on your driveway? If so, then a cell booster may help you. I have a detailed post on my blog about the cell booster I purchased. It works very well, but you do need to get some cell signal at the place where the external cell antenna will go. You can also use a more powerful directional Yagi antenna to pull in a more distant signal.

There are two other options. One, if you want to use your mobile number as your primary business contact number and can't get the cell to work at home, is to forward your cell to your landline when you're at home, and unforward when you leave. You should be able to dial in to your mobile voicemail to pick up messages from your landline. One thing to play with, though, is the timing of the pickup on your landline voicemail versus your mobile voicemail to make sure it will do what you want it to do.

You may want to explore some version of VOIP (voice over internet protocol) for your business number. I use Vonage, and that number rings through to both my cell and home numbers. This works well for me, because Vonage will forward to voicemail if the call isn't answered in 20 seconds, and my cell won't send to voicemail for 25 to 30 seconds. Another "single number" solution with a find me feature is Google Voice.

David, what great information.  I'm so happy that I posted this and I'm getting terrific responses like yours.  I went to your link and copied your information for my husband.  He's into electronics so this should be an easy fix for him. THANKS SO MUCH!

Ooooh, what's Google Voice? Will have to google it and find out. I live in the country too, but am fortunate that I have AT&T. I also noticed that when I got my new iPhone, it is much stronger, and now in stores or places where I couldn't get a signal before, I get one with the iPhone. Verizon is supposed to be getting iPhones sometime this year I think. Wonder if one of those will help you? You're right about people not believing you though. I've been to Ghana in Africa and people who live in mud huts (I'm NOT exagerating) have cell phones and no trouble getting a signal. Hmmm, still not sure I believe you. :0)  only kidding!

Maureen I'm putting my husband in charge of this project.  As much as I know that I need cell reception, I rather like not having it some times, but it is worthy of a look see.

Pangaea, this is the joy of AR.  Ask a question, that I really wasn't looking for an answer and wa-la here it is.  It's wonderful.  People that live just 13 miles away don't believe me so I tell them to come try it out to quiet them.  Hope it proves positive for you.

Ginger - no need to move just forward your cell calls to your home number when at home. We Live in an area code that most people think of as being the north pole so when he was out of work my husband put a "phone" in his mothers home which was 1 hour south of us and had it forwarded to our home phone.

Thanks for the suggestion Kathy.  I will keep that in mind.  Right now I have to hang with my home number because it's on all of my print and other media tools.
