Why did I wait so long for this simple yet dramatic change?

Why did I wait so long for this simple yet dramatic change?  Well, it's a bit like the story of the shoemaker's daughter or the plumber's wife.  I'm always excited to help someone else with changes in their home, for Staging or For Living (Redesign), but I don't always get those projects done in my own home.

This is just a hallway so most people would think...big deal. However, as with so many California Ranch style homes, the hallways use up a lot of square footage, so they need some attention.

The fix was easy: 1)Patch the walls as needed, 2)Add some paint and NOT in white or builder's beige, 3)Replace the light fixture and, 4)Add the accessories and decor items.

How long did it take, one day. What was the cost?  One gallon of paint for the side walls and 1 quart of paint for the focal end wall.

Next I'm ready to tile the backsplash in the kitchen. As soon as the weather cooperates for using the wet saw.

I just posted about moving my bedroom into my living room - BIG change - and seemingly crazy, but it's working for me. Also working on my home office. But both of these things took me a long time to get to. Good for you in turning your hall into such a nice spot!

Ginger,

I can relate!  It seems that as a stager, I'm always so busy working on everyones home, that I can't find the time to get to my own projects!  Glad to see you were able to accomplish one of your goals.  Can't wait to see your back splash when it's complete!

Your hallway looks fabulous!  Well done.  I think it is much harder finding the inspiration for your own home.  We tend to second guess ourselves most of the time.  I love the accent wall!

How elegant looking it is now! I have a living room I need to do something with, but it's been that way for a few years now. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one putting off my projects!

Kathy, my husband wants me BUSY for the same reason.  He will help me with these projects, reluctantly and knows that I wouldn't have them is business was booming.  As he says "busy hands are happy hands".  Thanks for commenting.

Pangaea, THAT'S a BIG change all right.  Post some photos.  Heck since you're not selling why not make it work for you...that's what I always preach with redesign and design projects!  Thanks.

Michelle, I would be that most of us, in this profession, have the same problems.  I also have to be careful of not OVER improving for this area.  The budget is always an issue.  Thank you for contributing.

Thank you Sharon.  I've wanted to do this for almost 5 years so there was pent-up inspiration.  Now the living room, that's another story.......just like you say.

Cathy, why thanks.  It's just what we're always trying to tell clients.  Small changes can have a big impact and for minimal dollars.

It looks fantastic, I really like how you have a focal point at the end of the hallway.  Nicely done!

Thanks Kate.  I'm trying to improve the overall energy of the house and this hallway really needed it.  Now I have to get rid of the mirrors in the bedroom...right?

Like the focal point at the end of the hall.  I SO need to work on my own home!  Why is it easier to give other people advice?!!

Hi Kim...just like our clients it's difficult to make objective decisions about our own dwellings, almost always.  Are you like me, clients think that I live in this ultra swank, perfect place....NOT.  When I tell them otherwise, I don't think that they believe me.  Thanks for stopping and commenting.

Very nice changes, Ginger. We need to remember to make our homes a place that we enjoy living in too, and not just give all of our focus to our clients! Right now I am slowly working on my master bedroom and bath by just making some style and color changes. I love the new energy I get from it!

Your hallway looks fantastic Ginger! I can see you finding all sorts of "reasons" to stroll down that hall and admiring your work of art. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Kathy, making this house enjoyable is one of my biggest challenges!!  It's great that the changes you're making give you more energy.  Who couldn't use more energy???  Have a great week and thanks for commenting.

Thank you Debra, I appreciate your remarks.  Hallways are usually SO-O boring and unnecessarily.  I stroll down this hallwhaay to my office so the changes were crucial.

Hi Ginger.  Looks great!  Especially the focal point at the end of the hallway.  I've been hung up at my house stripping wallpaper for quite some time.  Ugh!!!  Time to get my handyman back.  He seems to enjoy it.  Go figure.

Very dramatic change ... best of all the cost!  Your brave using a power tool. I know how to use one but I'm a chicken.

Good for you Ginger! It's so much easier to give advice and leave them to do the work LOL. I just went through a bathroom renovation and I know there are two more waiting and a two story hall. If only I could wave a magic wand!!!

Hi Patsy...euww, wallpaper stripping.  That's one job that I haven't tackled in many years.  I have an associate that actually LIKES doing that job.  Should I send her your way?  Thanks for commenting.

Liz, the low cost was part of the reason that it finally got done.  I'm really not so brave, and I dislike most saws.  However, my power miter saw/chop saw is one of my favorite power tools.  My feeling is that if you can't get over the fear, then leave it to someone else...it's not chicken it's wise.  Thanks for the support.

Janice, thank you.  I remember photos of your new bath and you did a great job.  I hear you about the magic wand.  Sometimes I have to tell agents that my wand is broken when they show me IMPOSSIBLE houses.

Thank you Chris.  The point of this blog post is that it doesn't have to cost a lot of $$ to make a significant visual change.  I appreciate your comment!
