Newly Renovated Fox Theater in Downtown Riverside

I am a HUGE fan of movies, architecture and history.  When you put all three together, I am in heaven.  Last weekend, we were fortunate enough to take a tour of the newly renovated Fox Theater in downtown Riverside.  I have wanted to see the inside of this building since I moved to Riverside in December of 1985.  I even wanted to see it when it was all boarded up.  I didn't care.  This is where they showed the first screening of Gone With the Wind in 1939.  This building has been around for decades and has seen Riverside change from a field of oranges to the bustling city that it is today.

I felt very underdressed for an occassion such as this.  Even though everybody was in jeans and it wasn't a black tie affair, I felt like I should have been wearing an Oscar de la Renta gown with my hair in a chic chignon and diamonds dripping from my neck.  You were brought back to when the Fox Theater was first erected in 1929 when you saw the classic Ford vehicles from the era lined up on the street outside.

Of course, I was prepared and brought both my still and my Flip cameras to capture the action:

I'll be seeing something here and soon, I promise.  Broadway has come to Riverside via the newly renovated Fox Theater in downtown Riverside.  I'm in heaven!

How cool is that!  Downtown Riverside over the last 10 years has turned in to a great looking place that you want to go to time and time again.

You're absolutely right, Kim.  I moved to Riverside as a kid in late 1985.  At that time, the stores were closed on Sundays, the mall was known as the Tyler Mall (not the fancy-schmancy "Galleria at Tyler" as it is known now) and the downtown area was somewhere you stayed away from.  It has SO changed over the last decade.  I love it.

The air of a play is in the air. I can feel it. I love going to the plays...it is a whole extension to entertainment.

Hey, Heather. Having visited Riverside back in the early 90's, this makes me very happy. I love it when someone takes interest in restoring older structures rather than destroying them for something newer. Thanks so much for sharing and I wish you all the best, Jim

Oh Heather, No wonder we are friends. We have so many of the same interests and likes. The Fox Theater in downtown Riverside is so similar to the Warner in downtown Erie that has been under renovation for the past 10+ years. Like you I love the beauty of the high ceilings, the carved wood the opulent carpeting, the curved staircase. I saw My Fair Lady at the Warner Theater with a college literature class and we had to dress up for the occassion. I still remember wearing pair of black silleto-style heels & gloves. Oh, how dated can I be!!!! The slide show of the old cars is so appropriate. Wouldn't I have looked terrific stepping out of one of those cars as a twenty-year old college student? Forget it . . . No furs, no jewlery.
