Earlier today I received a call from someone working for an SEO Company. We set up a time to talk over the phone latter in the afternoon. When 3:00 rolled around just like clockwork my phone range. After a few pleasantries and stroking of my ego on what a "decent" (not good or great) but decent web site my I had he went on to tell me about how services.
The story went something like this- two years ago I set out to become the very best SEO company available. I spent 6- months looking for the two very best techs that could guarantee top placement in 90 days or less. I found my two guys and we can offer our 90 day guarantee or you will get your money back. I was interested because I am always looking for ways to improve my organic search results with key words like Cedar Rapids Ia Real Estate.
He went on to point out weaknesses with my site and how for a mere $3000 he would create a new site with first page ranking with the three major search engines all within 90-days. Monthly maintenance only $150 per month.
Now, when I asked to see a realtor site he said he could not do that in order to protect technology(red flag). Instead he showed me another site which ranked first page for a particular search phrase. His argument was compelling so I agreed to a follow up call for Friday morning.
As soon as I hung up I started taking a closer look and with the help of a few others more knowledgeable than I it appeared that the sample site seemed to use spamming tactics, stuffing of keywords and other types of things that may actually hurt me in the long run. The other thing was that the key word search he used to show me how the site pulled on the first page was not even a heavily used term.
SEO can be very time consuming so it is important to be Leary of companies making huge promises at the expense of your pocketbook. I believe good organic search engine results take a steady effort over a long period of time....and certainly more than 90 days.
