This Saturday, January 30, 2010, at 10:00 am, the City of Louisville, CO, will dedicate a memorial located at the intersection of Front and Spruce Streets to John Breaux.  For those who don't know, about a year ago Mr. Breaux was killed when a motorist swerved and hit him while he was on the shoulder of Highway 287.  Mr. Breaux was a well-known and well-loved Louisville resident who could frequently be seen riding his bike all around east Boulder County picking up trash.

Admittedly, at the time of Mr. Breaux's passing, I was not familiar with him, and wondered why his death was such a huge deal to the community.  After all, motorist-pedestrian accidents unfortunately happen frequently, but rarely is there an instance when there is such wide-spread reporting of them.  After reading more about Mr. Breaux and his presence in Louisville and Lafayette, it became abundantly clear to me why.  Mr. Breaux made it his goal in life to spread as much good cheer as he could to anyone and everyone, and cared about his community enough to try to improve it in any way he could.  The memorials and tributes to Mr. Breaux that can be seen around Louisville and Lafayette not only speak volumes about Mr. Breaux's contributions, but also about the close-knit community in which he lived: his selflessness and good cheer were greatly appreciated, and are greatly missed.  I am proud to be a resident of a place where citizens such as Mr. Breaux are so highly-regarded. If only everyone had aspirations to have such a positive impact on their hometown as Mr. Breaux had.
