Four month delay in First Time Homebuyer Rebate

By

Filing for your $8,000 tax credit will take some patience!     There is no e-file provision, as the government is requiring documentation to verify the purchase.

The bad news - the delay will take some patience!    Currently there is a 4 month delay in payment.

Good News - You WILL get it!    Just don't plan on it the day you move in!

My wife is an accountant and she says that's no surprise to her. Some of the amended returns have taken 6 months for payment.

My clients have applied for the $8000 rebate with their tax return filing back in January, 2010.  They rec'd their tax refund, but no rebate.  Two trips to the local IRS office yielded no results except "it is in process".

Just learned that if it has been more than 16 weeks, you can request an "advocate" through the IRS, who will trace, handle, and hopefully, expedite.  6 months waiting with no result is ridiculous!  I could understand that there would be a back up on late April filings for it, but not January!  Typical bureaucracy delays.

@Jodi --- that DOES sound awfully long to wait for the tax credit!   I would definitely find someone to track it down!

When the IRS is saying weeks, know that means months, not weeks. Some have waited up to one and years, with a fight to get their legitimate rebate refund.I'm still waiting. This is the worst performance of the IRS I have seen in over 40 years.

@wilder - I have heard it has taken months and months.    BUT, we have LOTS of buyers that were eligible for this credit.   However, the government should be honest about timing of the refunds!

Yes, the IRS should be ready up front with sound factual information on the WHEN for any taxfilers FTHB rebate. There seems to be less of a process transparency attitude of IRS agents now than a few years back. It's like they have a 'culture' of their own internal mystery rules onto themselves with no service obligation to the public.I've talked the several Realtors who are expressing their buyers have waited a long time and still don't have the rebate refunds. Perhaps the NAR will find this sorest issue imporant enough to take priority for lobbying for. There are those behind still waiting for this rebate and those ahead who will.

My daughter has been waiting for her refund for over ONE YEAR now. Very basic, simple return. Her first home purchase. Nothing complicated at all. Ridiculous. Tax advocate has been of no help, says the IRS is ignoring her requests and my daughter will just have to wait. For the past year, it's the same thing each month... call the IRS, they are rude, say there's nothing they can tell her and she 'just needs to wait', will send a letter in 30 days... 30 days comes, letter says they will contact her in 30 days... Just goes round and round. I feel badly for her. She is doing fine without the money, was smart and purchased a home she can afford, but wants to do some renovations and it would come in handy for sure. All she wants is for the IRS to give her SOME sort of timeframe, or tell her SOMETHING about why it's taking so long. Just ridiculous and absolutely unacceptable.

Teresa, please contact me and I will see what I can do.    As far as I know, my first time homebuyers DID receive their rebates.

My son filed for the first time home buyer for a house he bought in 2009.  IRS said he could do an amended form for 2008) so he would get his rebate faster than waiting until he did his 2009 taxes.   Well guess what he's still waiting.  He received a letter stating he was denied due to them not getting anything that proves he lives in the house. He sent the closing statement, ins statement on the house and auto, his drivers license, his sons birth cert., bank statements, utility bills, check stubs, and other items.  What else can they want??????  This has caused a very large hardship on him, now he had to hire a cpa to represent him at a hearing --so far the cpa has not been able to do anything except the same thing he was doing, calling and being told you're in the stack we will get to you.  What a mess, his house needed work but it will have to wait on the gov. to decide what they are doing.   It seems they would at least take these in the order they were originally filed.  It's been about 19 mos, and still nothing

Donna, contact your congressman, and see if he/she can get involved and help your son get his rebate!     I get comments on here stating new home owners have not gotten their money --- but no way to contact you.    I would also contact the Realtor that helped your son with this transaction, and see how much they can help.
