How Can We Assist Our Defenders of Liberty?
As we move into a new decade, with trouble throughout the world and threats to our liberty here at home, what can we do as real estate professionals to assist our military personnel? In an exchange of communications with ActiveRain members Steve and Jan Bachman--Northern Virginia Realtors, we've begun discussing this issue, and would like input from others with similar interest. What support can we provide?

My partner, Nina Cross, is a volunteer with the USO here in the Puget Sound area, providing support to our military as they transit through the Seattle/Tacoma airport. She also helps military personnel in their quest for housing. We look at the needs of our military in providing real estate services with an understanding of unique requirements to enhance the lives of the service personnel and their families.
This introductory post is the first in a series to highlight the local bases in our area of service, Puget Sound. We also will look at surrounding areas for best housing solutions, recreational opportunities, while considering financing options and other professional services, as a basis for making quick and meaningful real estate decision. We also are part of a nationwide referral network and can help you find the right professionals in any area.
Financing Tips:
In a conversation with ActiveRain member Paul McFadden about current Veteran Administration Loan requirements, some current financing issues came out in our discussion worth noting: Due to the frequency of movement by military personnel and their families, it is important to make sure bills don't get lost in the move. Late payments may result in lower credit scores and today's target is a score above a minimum 620. While 0% down financing is still available on a 5% 30 year loan, it is important to remember some closing costs may not be covered. It also is important to keep in mind that government loans are under tighter scrutiny these days, so at least a 45 day escrow period should be part of the purchase and sale agreement. For more information on VA requirements and other financing options, give Paul McFadden a call. For other real estate assistance please call Nina Cross or Frank Kliewer (phone numbers below).
The first base to be highlighted in this series is the McChord Air Force Base located about 40 miles south of Seattle. This facility and the surrounding area are discussed in the companion article: McChord Air Force Base, Defender of Liberty, and the base next door Fort Lewis.
Currently, McChord's 62nd Airlift Wing is providing four Boeing C-17s and their crews to transport critical relief cargo into Haiti. The above pictures are of an existing Boeing B-17 the "Liberty Belle."
