Jan Stearns, Waterville Valley RealtySmall Town, Big Olympic Dreams!  The winter Olympics are right around the corner.  A number of spots on the U.S. Ski Team will be filled by athletes with a Waterville Valley, NH connection!  Considering how small our community is (less than 300 residents), and how small the state of New Hampshire is (1,315,809 people), that's something to crow about!

Freestyle skiers Dylan Ferguson, of Amesbury, MA, and Ashley Caldwell, of Hamilton, VA, were just named to the US Ski Team's Olympics squad.  Dylan is a Waterville Valley Academy alumni and member of the US Freestyle Team's aerial squad who started skiing at Waterville Valley as a Mitey Mite when he was very young.  Ashley was with the Waterville Valley Academy as a training-only athlete a few years back.

Hannah Kearney, of Norwich, VT, is a member of the US Freestyle Team in moguls and officially made the Olympics in Vancouver by coming in first place in Olympic Trials in Steamboat Springs, CO in December.  Hannah also took a first place in a World Cup last week in moguls.  Hannah is a current member of the BBTS ski club and has been training under BBTS Freestyle Program Director, Nick Preston, this season.

Michelle Gorgone, of Boston, MA and a Waterville Valley Academy alumna, is a member of the US Snowboard Team in racing and officially made the Olympics in Vancouver, too.

Scotty Lago, of Seabrook, NH, made the US Olympics Team in halfpipe and considers Waterville Valley and Loon his home mountains.

Kris Freeman, of Andover, NH, has been the best American distance cross-country racer for the past decade, and at 29, he is entering what is considered the peak age for his sport. After missing the bronze medal by only 1.3 seconds in the 15km classic at the 2009 World Championships, the New Hampshire skier nicknamed "Bird" is in good position to win the United States' first Olympic medal in cross country since Bill Koch in 1976.  Waterville Valley is Kris' home training site.

Congratulations to all the US athletes heading to Vancouver for the Olympics -- especially to our very own Waterville Valley athletes:  Ashley, Dylan, Hannah, Kris, Michelle, and Scotty!

Cheers! Jan
