Utilizing earth-friendly products and practices in residential interiors makes good design sense. With the variety of green furnishings and finishes currently available, the appeal of sustainable design has never been greater. Here are some simple steps you can take towards creating your own green home:
1. Choose major appliances with an Energy Star rating and utilize “power saver” and “sleep” features. Also, consider switching to fluorescent light bulbs and using more natural lighting with windows or skylights.
2. Seal drafty air leaks around the windows. If the water heater is 12-15 years old, consider replacing it with tank-less water heater and take advantage of the Federal tax credit program.
3. Use water-based paints, finishes, and sealants, rather than oil based paints that emit harmful chemicals.
4. Add a layer of a “green” insulation product to your existing attic insulation.
5. Choose carpets, rugs, window treatments and other textiles made from natural fibers like cotton or wool, that are untreated with toxins such as pesticides and chemical cleaners.
6. Ask for flooring products made from rapidly renewable materials like bamboo or linoleum.
7. Reuse materials such as brick, stone, glass, tile or metal in new and interesting ways. Old wood can also be safely treated and reused in various innovative ways.
8. Consider using ceiling fans. Conserve energy by choosing natural ventilation (weather permitting).
9. Maintain indoor air quality by using cleaning products and personal grooming products in non- aerosol containers to avoid polluting the air with harmful chemicals.
10. Install low-flow showerheads and faucets. For more information on going green, visit: www.builditgreen.org Additional tips about sustainable products:
