Groundhog Day. It's coming up on February 2, 2010. We should all know the story by now. The groundhog emerges from his burrow. If he sees his shad Groundhog Day - The Movie! ow, there will be 6 more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, there will be an early spring.

And this isn't just any old groundhog. There is only one weather forecaster - Punxsutawney Phil. And his burrow is on Gobbler's Knob. Here are some tidbits about this famous groundhog:

Phil is right 100% of the time
Phil has been predicting for over 120 years
Phil owes his longevity to a yearly sip of an "elixir of life"
Phil speaks only Groundhogese

There is an Official Website for the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club that gives a plethora of information about the festivities involved and all things groundhog.

New to the story though, now PETA has gotten involved. They sent a letter to the organizers of Groundhog Day to ask for the real Punxsutawney Phil to be replaced with a robotic groundhog. Stating that "groundhogs which are normally shy and spend much of their time in burrows, "become stressed when they are exposed to large, screaming crowds; flashing lights from perhaps hundreds of cameras; and human handling."

The response from Bill Deeley,President of the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, was that Phil is "being treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania." It appears that Phil is kept in a climate-controlled environment as well as being inspected by the state's Department of Agriculture.

I'm not sure what the outcome will be between these groups but one thing I do know is that Punxsutawney Phil is one cute groundhog for being over 120 years old!
