I'm sure you're familiar with that classic commercial where an elderly woman falls and cannot get back up. If you're like many insurance agency owners you can relate with how the woman feels: helpless, anxious and afraid.
If so, you're not alone. As you know, every business - from small to multi-million dollar corporations have their issues. So how do you deal with that aching feeling in your gut? What is the difference between the agency that is able to "get off the floor" and those than just die a slow death? Why do some agencies seem to meet each problem with vigor and enthusiasm, propelling their team forward?
If you can relate, there is hope. First, you need to go to a quiet place and ask yourself, why do I feel this way? It is possible to feel anxious so long that you lose touch with the realities of your agency? You must begin to think unemotionally about the issues. What keeps you up at night about your agency? What are your fears? Get a pen and paper and go through the process of listing ALL the areas you're worried about.
Once you've gone through this exercise, take a step back. How long is your list? 10 items? 20? 30? This is great! Now you know what you have! You've taken the problems out of the fuzzy world of your mind and feelings and committed them to paper.
This process can be very overwhelming as you honestly look at your agency and its weaknesses. Don't get overwhelmed, because NO agency can work on 20 items at once. The key is to pick ONE item of concern and decide you're going to DO SOMETHING about it. Determine to make one incremental change each week. You can't solve everything, but you can make small changes EACH DAY. After several weeks you'll see a significant change in your agency. You'll begin to feel more in control and the anxieties will fade away.
