Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council - Hosts Stay Warm, Save Money

Westchester residents enjoy some of the highest energy costs in the nation.  If you heat your home with home heating oil - you are well aware of the pain. But even home owners who use natural gas are getting hit.  ConEd has some of the highest service costs nationally - so everyone feels the heat - no pun intended.

On Wednesday, Feb 3 at 7 PM, the Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council will be hosting an event "Stay Warm, Save Money" at the Silver Tips Tea Room on 3 North Broadway in Tarrytown NY. Enjoy the Tea and Nibbles while learning how to save energy and money.  Included are cheap tricks as well as information on government subsidies.

I could definitely use some help in this department. My heating costs have been steadily escalating.  So I plan to stop by and learn.

HA!  Every time I read something from a utility company about saving on a fuel bill, I want to ask,

"Why didn't you start by building a lobby with a little less marble."  Our BG&E office in MD is a showplace for marble - floors, walls, etc.

The most cost effective utility in my entire market area is a co-op in Southern Maryland.

Dominion electric decided that I was using too little electricity so they replaced my meter and sent me a bill for $1,900 for undercharges over the past year.

We're doomed.

Hi Lenn, I had a similar thing happen this year - but with gas heating. They changed the meter and I owed them money.  Not as much as you but STILL.  Westchester has some of the highest rates in the country. Just INSANE. Apparently I wasn't spending enough money. Um....did they take into account that I kept the temp at JUST bearable levels??? That MIGHT have something to do with it.

Hi Barbara,

The gauling thing is we don't HAVE to be "stuck" but the business lobbies have blocked and blocked and blocked the development of alternative energy that doesn't pollute and doesn't cost as much.  Better yet, on the liberal side the opposition to nuclear power - which would be a feasable stop-gap has also been blocked.  We can't seem to get out of our own way!

Hi Harry,

Saving money on utilities is getting harder and harder.  I'm interested in what they have to say....I need HELP....

Most of the time, my thermostate is very low, 60-65.  I don't want to heat this entire house.  I have a ceramic heater in my office in which I spend most time.

That's funny Lenn - I'm set at 60.  I have a small heater for my work area and one for the bedroom.  I don't heat the whole place beyond what is necessary.  Heck - the dogs don't need it - they are Siberian Huskies.
