IN ACTIVE RAIN -vs- INACTIVE RAIN

IN ACTIVE RAIN -vs- INACTIVE RAIN.....there is a difference and I am living proof. I am investor in Wayne, Michigan, a western suburb of Detroit. A fellow investor suggested that I join this on-line network, Active Rain,  for Real Estate agents and investors. So I checked it out. I signed up. I read some blogs and I even posted a blog. At the time, I didn't understand blogging and how it would help me with my real estate investing.

That was August of 2008. For the next year I didn't visit the site and I didn't see any benefit from my being in Active Rain. So in September of 2009 I decided to check it out again. I looked at my 1,500 points versus other people with 100,000-300,000 points. What was I doing wrong? I read some more blogs. I started learning from other peoples tips and their links to other valuable information. I started posting some comments. I updated my profile and my picture.

my profile

I started to see some positive results coming from my actions.

Then it hit me. I am not IN ACTIVE RAIN, I am INACTIVE RAIN. I wasn't reaping any benefits out of Active Rain because I wasn't putting anything into it. That was when I decided to be more active. I dedicated myself to signing in every day, reading some blogs and commenting on at least twenty blogs a week. The points started adding up. The creative juices started to flow. I thought, "I can do this." So I wrote another blog. Then I got a few comments on my old blog and on my new blog. It's finally starting to make sense to me. People in the rain don't know I'm here if I don't speak up and connect with them.

Then one day, my phone rang. I didn't recognize the number or the area code. Could this be a tele-marketer? I politely answered. The woman on the other end introduced herself.

"Hi, my name is Pamela St. Peter and I am calling from North Carolina". She was calling me about my recent blog. WOW. Calling me. I felt special. She said sheye candye was impressed with what I had said and how I had said it but felt that my blog needed more "eye candy" and would I mind if she gave me some tips. Now I could have gotten defensive and thought she was being a little bit forward. But I recognized a genuine effort to offer me some positive feed back. We spoke briefly and agreed that I would call her back later in the day.

When I called back, Pamela was very pleasant and a joy to talk to. She and I logged onto Active Rain simultaneously. She guided me through the proper steps to using the blog tools. She showed me the difference between WYSIWYG and HTML and how to create links inside my blog. Pamela walked me through inserting a photo and adjusting and aligning the appearance of my photo for better placement inside my blog. She recommended some other sites to use to enhance my blogs. We spoke for FORTY FIVE minutes.

I came away from that phone call with a better understanding of what I was doing and how to do it. I was very grateful for the advice. Pamela is a perfect example of what Active Rain is all about. People helping each other. Thanks to Pamela, I am learning but I still have a lot to learn.

Now I felt like I was IN ACTIVE RAIN instead of INACTIVE RAIN.

Fantastic blog, Craig.  Thanks so much for checking in to mine!    I think I will follow your advice in your blog, and go hit the search button to find out how to enhance my photos better in my posts.  I am frustrated a little with that.

Thanks again

Craig, I read your comment on Dagny's blog and had to check out yours. I love how you have the comparison INACTIVE RAIN and IN ACTIVE RAIN - this is brilliant. Wow, 20 blogs a week is a lot. I have to still get into the habit of blogging more. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Dagny, The search tool is great. You can find a blog to answer any question there. And if you can't find it, ask. Someone in Active Rain will answer.

Birgit, Thank you for stopping by. Right now I only read and comment on at least 20 blogs a week. That may lead to writing more. But I think we all see the advantages to writing blogs.

Renee, I have learned first hand the power of Active Rain. I should have been more active sooner.

Awesome post. I went to an Active Rain Camp but haven't blogged anything yet. I guess I feel like I need to learn as much as I can before I do anything and maybe I'm a little nervous too.

Lynn and Bryan, here is my first blog. I had no clue what I was doing but I went out and did it anyway. You have to start somewhere. I have learned a lot and have a lot more to learn but you learn from experiance. Read posts and comments and leave comments.

Just write what you are thinking about. If you go to the search box at the top of Active Rain and type in "blog ideas"  you will find a number of posts about blogging. This may help steer you in the right direction. Join a couple of different groups that meet your interests. Welcome to Active rain.....enjoy it.

Mark, glad I got your attention. Active Rain is a great community where the members support and encourage each other. There's a noticeable difference between my first blog and my most recent. That comes from practice. The more you write, the better it gets.    Go to www.activerain.com and sign up.

Tami, you can post to Active Rain and your outside blog. BONUS. Double the exposure.

I started in 2009 and didn't start blogging until 2011.  I was not inactive, I was on life support.  But now I am having a great time on ActiveRain and blogging as often as I can.
