About the First State
Delaware is known as the "First State" as it was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. Delawareis divided into three counties - New Castle, the northernmost, Kent in the Center and Sussex to the south. The counties are broken into "Hundreds" which are named for the militia term during the Revolutionary War. The largest part of the population is in New Castle County where most of the business is. We have a very diverse and strong economy here. Some of the larger companies are DuPont, Astra Zeneca, Bank of America and W.L. Gore. Dover is the capital city and is located in Kent County. The original capital city was New Castle which is a charming colonial town loaded with history. Old New Castle is located on the Delaware River and was founded by the Swedes.
