My Anti-Social Experiment!

By

Old Phone, New Tricks!

If you know me you know that I am ANYTHING but anti-social. Facebook, Twitter, AR, LinkedIn.....etc, ad nauseum! But I'm about to become anti-social.....or some may call it more personal! (What's she up to now?)This is crazy and it is an experiment that I will commit to for 3 months. In a nutshell: I am dropping my Crackberry and moving down to a basic phone. NOT EVEN A FULL KEYBOARD! All my social networks will be addressed at home during my down time.

This all started with somewhat of an intervention!  My husband and my family told me I was neurotic about my phone and nervously checked it all the time. Of course I denied it but after drinking in these harsh words I left my phone at home and went to meet a friend in a crowded restaurant to see how I would handle it SANS the phone. My friend was late and I wish I had a video of me fidgeting. I padded my pocket and purse about 10 times forgetting I left the phone home. God will only know how much lipstick I nervously put on because I know it was more than 3 layers and then something odd happened..... I started to look around at the whole room feeling like I was in slow motion. There was at least one person at every table fondling their phone. I would have been one of them. I then shifted to the other diners without phones in their hands. They were talking comfortably and having a great time without shifty eyes looking for the red flashing lights..."You've Got Mail"!

Agents I must disclose that my husband works with me side by side from home here in the Big Canoe Communityand I have him cc'd on all my business email. So he would call me with anything important like a lead or a contract. BUT I think I'm ready to look my clients in the eyes, and not insult them with constant email checking or even worse Social Networking while I'm with them.

Has anyone else out there actually tried this? Am I truly nuts for wanting a more personal connection to my clients, giving them 100% of my time while I am with them. They deserve it and I deserve it too! Three months starting as soon as the phone arrives. I will document it and keep you posted. Wish me Luck!

Cheers to Good Old Fashioned Eye Contact!

It's true we have become quite dependent of our sidearms strapped to our belts.  I have to resist the temptation to see what's up when driving down the road.  Then there's the wife who gets on me for pulling it out and checking an email while she's talking....(duh. idiot thing for me to do, but I somehow still do it...)

So good luck on your experiement.  Not sure I can handle that...  :)

Cheers Karin!  I leave my phone in my truck when I meet with clients.  Alternately, I turn it off when I am with them.

I explain that I do not screen calls, but I also do not take calls when I am with a client, so I need them to understand if they get voicemail when they call me.  The also understand I will call them back!

Wait until you see the look of appreciation in your clients eyes!  You don't need to dump your Crackberry, just turn it off or leave it in the car when you are with clients.  What you are really doing is "Being Present" for them.  That's easy when you leave the phone behind!

Keep me updated!  I wish you well.

Good Luck I hope the experiment works well. I to find myself not paying enough attention to my wife, my friends and clients because of always checking the email as it vibrates in.

And the last one was an offer for 28 mil if i just send them my banking info so they can send me the money from thier long loved but dead uncle who had hidden it in a bank account in Sierra Leon or some such place.

Oregon just passed a 'no texting / no cell phones' while driving law.  That helps!  Nothing like a ticket (I think it's $160) to do a little intervention!!

Just carry it but don't watch it constantly -- you might still need it for some emergency item -- balance , balance.

@ Tristan, I'm already shaking in my boots over it but I truly believe it will make me a better agent! Luckily I work in my neighborhood and will keep a laptop with me at all times, so I won't be a total Nutcase!

@Vic, I hate to admit it but my willpower is so bad that I'd find excuses to run to the car if I left "Cracky" in there.

@Carla, I'm surprised that I'm in one piece with all the bad habits I've aquired regarding driving and texting.

@ Clark-My big joke in the house was "This MUST be opportunity calling....again"! LOL

I tell my clients when they are with me they get my full attention.  I will not answer my phone or check e-mail.  Then I tell them I do that with all my clients and if I don't return a call for a couple of hours it is because I am with a client.  They all end up telling me how responsive I am to their needs.

Good luck Karin, but you won't need it. Social was around way before there was media attached to the end of it!

Thanks Tim and Doug! I'm ready for this change, if anything it's the after hours with my family. I swear I was about to set one extra plate at the table for the friggin phone! I did keep it away when I was with clients, but the moment we got back into the car my eye started wandering for the flashing light. It was tough enough for me to do this. Perhaps there is a Realtor-Reality Show.....Phone Intervention LOL!

Hi Karin - By stepping out and meeting people in real life, you just might differentiate yourself from all of the other agents. And as connected as blogging, Facebook and Twitter make us feel, you still can't buy or sell a house with a status update or tweet!

Karin,

I find it beneficial when meeting with a client to leave my phone either in my car or turned off, if meeting in my office. I used to be a manic phone checker until a friend told me"Ya know Walt its ok to leave your phone in the car."

I hope your experimant pays off positive dividends for you.

Good luck with the withdrawal period.  I can imagine it will be tough.  I love my phone too but I am good at not using it when I am with clients.  Keep us posted on whether you are surviving.
