Noah's Ark Pet Store in Winnetka - More Than Just a Place to Buy Pet Food!

NOAH'S ARK PET STORE
Winnetka IL

Noah's Ark Pet Store in Winnetka is owned by Angie DeMars - and as far as animals go, she walks the Noah's Ark in Winnetkawalk.  Her pet store caters to all things animal, but she is a dedicated and passionate advocate for adoption and works closely with PAWS Chicago (Pets Are Worth Saving) a no-kill shelter.

Angie grew up in Colorado and is a lifelong animal lover.  After graduating from college, she bought a one-way ticket to Chicago because she was intrigued by seeing it so often in movies and felt it would be a great place to live.  She went right to work at KPMG as a database manager and eventually got married and settled down in Winnetka.

She adopted a pet from PAWS, a sickly Maltese named Mimi, and through the rigors of taking care of her dog, she became passionate about animals and began to get more involved in volunteering for PAWS.  She took a part-time job at Noah's Ark and in March of 2003 bought the store from the previous owner.

Angie DeMars of Noah's Ark, WinnetkaBecause of her experience of caring for her sick dog, she learned a lot that helps her with current customers and their pets.  Although she's not a veterinarian, she has saved two dogs that she correctly diagnosed with heart failure and told the owners to get their pets to emergency immediately!

Noah's Ark carries all-natural pet foods that are made with higher quality ingredients with no by-products or filler, plus a huge assortment of pet supplies.  She also caters to owners of birds, lizards, fish, hamsters, etc.  Crickets are available for owners of critters that eat them.

But Angie offers much more than pet supplies.  She is an Adoption Counselor for Paws and has helped adopt over 100 animals.  She educates people on adoption and helps interested people with all the necessary paperwork.  She herself fosters cats for Paws as well as lost and stray cats that are found in Winnetka which she feels is necessary since Winnetka has no animal control.  In Glencoe, there is animal control and she partners with them and offers food for captured animals.

The store also offers kittens for adoption that are brought up from the Chicago facility.  When I visited her on Friday, there were two cats in the store, of which one had been adopted and a sweet black kitten named Sun who was still waiting for someone to take him home.

In addition, Angie hosts several dog adoption days where the PAWS dogs are offered and shown off in front of the store with volunteer handlers.  These are usually held in warmer weather, and I will post the dates as they become available.  Also on the calendar for April 10  is Mimi's March" a 2 mile dog walk through town - more information to come.

Angie loves her job, her work with animals, and interacting with her customers. Support her store and her efforts on behalf of animals - and if you are looking for a cute kitty - she's got one,  In fact, she's got lots!                                                                                           Sun - Noah's Ark Pet Store, Winneka

Margaret,

At the risk of being redundant here, "What a great Localism post!"  I'm a huge fan of Localism.  In this tough retail market, the value of an Agent like yourself bringing the spotlight to a local business via Google and the internet is tremendous!

Is this the same store that was once in Elk Grove?  There used to be a great store that catered to all kinds of exotic pets & birds and the store closed in my area years ago.  I got my blue macaw 'Sam' from there BTW. Sounds like a great store & I'll be sure to stop in when in the area.  At least I know where a PAWS adoption center is!

You can't beat a local, caring business in your community.  As a person who has owned a dog all her life, I will go out of my way and pay more for a place that has my pet in mind.

Thanks for posting. It is wonderful to learn of people in their communities who expand beyond just running a business but takean active role in helping those creature who can not advocate for themselves. I am currently working with a couple who also do rescue work. We are looking at property that has the potential to be a off leash dog park which could also support several other businesses like a groomer, pet foods and supplies, etc. An exciting opportunity.

Thanks for sharing Angie's story.  She sounds like a very caring person for the creatures that can't care for themselves.  I hope she and her business will survive this current economic climate and folks like her, her caring employees and business are so important in this society.

As an animal lover I could wish that at the very least folks who care at all would spay and neuter their pets to help the situation at least a little for all the abandoned and abused animals who can't help or protect themselves.
