The first rule of successful communications
Is to listen . . . . listen with interest 80% of the time and to speak 20% of the time.
Listen to the other person to understand their wants, needs, desirers and motivation.
Ask questions of the person to gain deeper insight to who they really are as a person. In listening we better understand how we can assist them and how we can be of value to them.
Encourage the person to speak and proactively listen to them to fully engage them.
Successful communications is in the art of listening.
